A fiery debate has sparked after a cruise denied eight passengers to board the ship after they failed to make the 3 pm cut-off time.
The Norwegian Dawn ship left the tourists on an African island, some without their possessions after the private tour they were on ran late.
The group have now made their way by plane, ferry and car to Senegal, over 2,000 miles from São Tomé and Príncipe, where the Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) ship departed without them last Wednesday.
US couple Jill and Jay Campbell, who were among the abandoned eight cruisers have spent more than $7,000 in travel costs to get to the port in Senegal.
“We truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship follows, they follow those rules too rigidly,” Ms. Campbell told NBC’s the Today Show on Tuesday.

I’d wager she doesn’t believe in the Rules 1. Men are Men and 2. Women are Women.
They'll probably sue (and win) back their travel costs.
Makes sense, although I wonder if indeed large cruise ships are set up to meet small boats at sea, in moderate or better weather at lest? I suppose they are, or by helicopter like for medical evacs?
The single most important thing to remember while on liberty in a foreign port is “NEVER MISS MOVEMET”. Its your fault no matter what it is, You missed movement when/if you get back to the ship your 1st action will be to report to the brig.
That's the rules. Have to book everything through the cruise even if they're more expensive and they may not have everything you want.
THIS.
Seems as though the ship was still on the dock, silly not to let them board.

If a plane is still on the tarmac, should latecomers force it to let them on?
Ships only guarantee they are responsible for you being late if they sponsored the tour. There are a lot of cruisers who book their own tours privately to save money. Looks like they took gamble and lost.
If you want to have a laugh, look up “pier runners” videos on YouTube. Lots of people barely make it back to the ship on time. Some don’t make it back on time, and they have to find their own transportation home.
Finally, I think cruise lines get fined for staying too long at a dock. They are paying to be there, and there are schedules they must abide by. The people who are raising a fuss over their lateness causing the ship to leave without them need to take it up with the private tour company who made them late….
Have the cruise line hire a small boat to wait at the pier to pick up any late passengers and ferry them out to the cruise ship out to sea. At an inordinate price of course.

My last cruise a couple of latecomers did exactly that (on their own of course) and the ship let them on apparently.
None of the articles made it clear, but, it sounds like the passengers were planning on boarding the vessel “mid-stream” which is VERY dangerous when done by experienced Coasties, CBP officers or river pilots.
There’s not anyway that would be feasible to inexperienced civilians, much less octogenarians.
I'll give them some sympathy when you take private tours you are completely dependent on them getting you back on time.
The ship line should stop doing business with that group.

Very true. But I still think it ridiculous to leave while they’re on the pier, as opposed to being nowhere in sight, which is a different story.
Some details remain unclear. But, it appears that this was a private tour unaffiliated with the cruise ship.
I’m seeing more and more frequently, rude public behavior by people who feel rules, manners, punctually, common courtesy or any other traditional cultural norm simply does apply to them.
They may or may not share that mindset. But both the cruise ship passengers and the tour operators know the rules and should accept the consequences.

This was a tender port where the cruise ship uses their lifeboats to transport passengers from the ship to shore.
A private tour is not affiliated with the cruise line. If they were on an official shore excursions the ship will wait. That is why ship board excursions are more expensive.

The NCL ship was not at the pier. This was a tender port.
“””In a statement provided to news.com.au, the US based Norwegian Cruise Lines said while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour “not organised through us” missed the last tender back to the vessel, “therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3pm local time.”””””
Well played. And that’s one nice thing about Free Republic. No matter what the topic, somebody will post something humorous.
(By the way, that’s quite unlike a typical liberal website. It’s one sour comment after another there. Nothing constructive. And worse, nothing funny.)
Lol… I am one of those rule following women. I just went on a cruise in October. We were supposed to be back on the ship no later than 1 PM. So of course I was back on the ship by 11:30 AM. :). My friends made fun of me, but I don’t care. I was not going to be one of those, “oh the taxi got stuck in traffic. It wasn’t our fault!” Or “ we lost track of time at the restaurant”. Nope.
