‘It destroyed my frigging house!’: Calls flood Putnam County Sheriff’s Office after F-15 sonic boom causes damage

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office got more than a dozen calls on Saturday after a sonic boom caused by low-flying jets shocked residents and caused damage ranging from items falling off walls to broken glass.

The sheriff’s office took calls from Pomona Park, Lake Como, Crescent City and as far north as Palatka, and several people reported seeing two low-flying jets and hearing loud booms, which were the result of the jets breaking the sound barrier. One caller said they saw the sonic boom bubble.

The jets involved were F-15s from the Florida Air National Guard. The guard acknowledged the incident in an email to News4JAX but did not confirm it was a sonic boom, however, a Navy spokesperson said the “sonic boom” over Putnam County was not caused by U.S. Navy aircraft, after it was initially unclear which jets caused the disturbance.

“The Florida Air National Guard recently became aware of damage and noise complaints as a result of low-altitude training in Putnam County on Saturday, March 2nd. In response to this event, Florida National Guard command has directed that an investigation take place to determine the facts and implement any necessary measures to prevent this type of incident in the future,” the national guard said in a statement. “The Florida National Guard extends its deepest apologies for any resulting damage and the negative impact to the local community.”

Back in the 80s I was doing an exploration drilling project in the supersonic flight area in Dixie Valley, NV. The pilots would make supersonic passes over the rig at about 100 feet. Quite startling if you didn’t happen to see them coming, because you sure didn’t hear them until they arrived.

As a long time pilot who has to follow the rules or face consequenses this irritates me. I guess if you make the rules you don’t have to follow them.

“ I can remember all of the 60s and sonic booms were a regular occurrence.”
I lived south of ST. Louis. In the 60s I would guess every Phantom jockey can down our way to break the sound barrier.

We had plenty of sonic booms in the 70s and although they always rattled the door and window panes, no glass ever cracked or broke. Also, nothing fell from the walls or tables even if they vibrated or rattled a bit.

This seems a bit much.

Since this is the FLORDIA National Guard having them fly along the Mexican border would be a bit strange.

Unless they were being loaned to Texas.

When I was in the Navy, the Tomcats used to do supersonic fly-bys of the carrier at flight deck level, right up close.

It amazed me.

There was something completely alien about seeing it coming...the shockwave flashing on and off intermittently not a sound.

Then, the thing would zip past, still no sound, but moving faster than you have ever seen anything move.

Then...

BOOM!

Even the guys who hated being in the Navy would jump up and down, pumping their fists, and cheer!

My childhood home was on the flight path between a Navai Air base and a Naval Weapons Center where they made practice bomb drops from F-4’s. When it started, we had sonic booms daily with 1,000 ft flight decks. Cracked windows in the house. Scare you to death every time.

People raised hell and the occurrence declined but still happened now and again.

I don't mind sonic booms so much, as long as this grim-faced guy doesn't show up on my doorstep afterwards:

We live near Davis-Monthan in Tucson, which often hosts training for non-US Air Force pilots. There is a live firing range on the far side of a local mountain range/national park and occasionally we can hear aircraft hitting the afterburners when they leave town to go shooting, followed by echoing sonic booms from the mountain tops. Usually it’s some island nation Air Force, tho I do recall one incident when the Ukrainians were in town.

I guess they’re used to cheating the sound barrier back home and figure since they’re over a wilderness it’s no big deal. Personally I enjoy it, distinctive but not glass breaking…

Far more common 40 years ago…one day I was flying a sailplane near Gila Bend and was treated to a supersonic flyby of 2 f-15s about 500 yards away at my altitude in front of me, roughly from my 1 to my 9. Fortunately I saw them coming, otherwise I would’ve thought I had a mid-air or something from that enormous BANG!
