A Soviet-era Antonov-24 aircraft carrying 30 passengers landed on a frozen river near an airport in Russia's far east on Thursday because of pilot error, transport prosecutors said. Screenshot courtesy of NBC/Youtube Dec. 28 (UPI) -- While flying through Russia's far east, a Polar Airlines flight touched down unexpectedly on a frozen Kolyma river due to a pilot error early Thursday, the airline said. No injuries were reported.

According to a release from the Russian airline, flight YAP217 was on the route "Yakutsk-Zyryanka-Srednekolymsk," when the Antonov-24 aircraft landed off the runway of Zyryanka airport in the Yakutia region.

Created in 1959, the An-24 was designed for short- and medium-haul airlines.

According to Polar Airlines, 30 passengers and four crew members were on board the aircraft. The plane was not damaged.

"The territorial department of the Federal Air Transport Agency has ordered an investigation into this fact," the Polar Airlines statement reads.

"According to preliminary information, the cause of the aviation incident was an error by the crew in piloting the aircraft," a spokesperson for the Eastern Siberian transport prosecutor said in a statement.

Well if Sully could do it on a non-frozen river...

The Rough Landing

A flight crew is landing at an unfamiliar airport. The control tower gives them a runway assignment, and they start their approach.

The pilot says, “Does that runway look kind of short to you?”

The co-pilot says, “It sure does.”

“I thought it was supposed to be longer than that”

“Me too”

“Better set full flaps.”

“Full flaps set.”

“I want thrust reversers the minute we touch.”

“Standing by on the thrust reversers.”

“And full power once thrust reversers are set.”

“Roger that.”

“I’m gonna try to catch the very end of the runway and stand on the brakes. Stand by to reverse thrust.”

“Roger that.”

They touch down, blast the thrust reversers, stomp the brakes, and just manage to get the plane stopped before it runs off into the grass.

“God in heaven!” panted the pilot. “That was the shortest runway I’ve ever landed on!”

His co-pilot says, “Yeah, but look how wide it is!”

Any landing you can walk away from is a successful one.

At least the Russkis are willing to admit it was a mistake. The Canadians do the same thing and it’s “unknown causes”.

Something like that happened in Anchorage with a Korean airlines plane, but it was confused pilots trying to take off on a taxiway. They cleared a snow bank by a small amount, it would have killed a couple hundred

The Kolyma valley is where millions died in Gulag camps during Stalin's purges.

Next flight, bring parachute, lifejacket and a good pair of ice skates, just to play it safe!

I once landed, at night, at a large airport, on the taxiway.

It was after the tower closed for the night, and the runway lights were not responding to the usual 7-clicks on the CTAF.

Not a river, for sure, but certainly personally very memorable.

We’ve got 99 problems in THIS country and what happens to Russian airliners sure as hell isn’t one of them.

My former boss took off in a fog. He was on the taxiway by mistake. As he was accelerating, he saw a fuel truck in front of him. He pulled back on the yoke hard and cleared the truck by about 20 feet.

I think it was Harrison Ford who landed his Aviat Husky on a taxiway, narrowly missing a loaded 737.

Looks like their airport runway is a sandbar next to the river. How far away did they land, is it blown out of proportion with the Russia bad group?
