These Are The Slowest Charging EVs On The Market Today
Jalopnik ^ | December 28, 2023 | By Lawrence Hodge

One key to making EV adoption to work is fast charging. People that are used to filling up their gas tanks in mere minutes won’t be so easily swayed by the idea of having to sit at a charging station for nearly an hour.

In charging testing done by Edmunds, they found the fastest and slowest charging EVs on the market. While Edmunds used metrics like miles per charging hour to mainly measure the speed, it can come off a bit confusing. So we’ll stick with their basic metric here: the time it took to get to 100 miles of range. The EVs here are the slowest charging EVs they tested, in order from least slowest to slowest.

Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat Extended Range - Average time to add 100 miles of range: 18 mins 4 seconds

Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium Extended Range RWD - Average time to add 100 miles of range: 18 mins 15 seconds

Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum -/Average time to add 100 miles of range: 18 mins 47 seconds

Rivian R1T Launch Edition (21-inch wheels) - Average time to add 100 miles of range: 19 mins

Rivian R1T Launch Edition (20-inch wheels) - Average time to add 100 miles of range: 19 mins 3 seconds

Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium AWD - Average time to add 100 miles of range: 20 mins 26 seconds

Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance - Average time to add 100 miles of range: 23 mins 22 seconds

Chevrolet Bolt - Average time to add 100 miles of range: 33 mins 31 seconds

Chevrolet Bolt EUV - Average time to add 100 miles of range: 34 mins 49 seconds

I expect (hope really) that when sanity returns and people see what a folly all this renewable crap is most of the accommodations you suggest will just go away. The gild on this lily seems to be fading.

The EV persists to be a very expensive and glorified golf cart. Fine for buzzing around town.

If your average ICE vehicle is refilled in 5 minutes and your average EV takes four hours to charge to the same range as a full tank of gas, then you’re going to need 48 EV chargers for each gasoline pump in any given area if the number of EVs on the road is comparable to the number of ICEs.

How many business establishments at a highway interchange have this kind of real estate to work with?

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

The charging time report is flawed imo.

More specifically, the study overlooks that EV batteries take even longer to charge in cold weather (correction welcome).

EV CHARGING IN COLD TEMPERATURES COULD POSE CHALLENGES FOR DRIVERS (non-FR; 7.30.2018)

On top of taking extra time to charge batteries in cold weather, EV batteries are already known to not hold charge as long in such weather.

“ICE cars get about 400 miles in about 2 minutes.”

I was just doing the numbers for my Ford Expedition. About 16 mpg, so about six gallons, which takes about two minutes. Versus 18 to 34 minutes in that list.

“What glue are you sniffing?”

In Europe (for a while longer) and much of Asia, one can take public transit without worrying about the Amish beating the crap out of you due to skin color. In the US, not so much.

Likewise, if EVs get mandated and replace normal cars, same thing - you will be sitting ducks for the Amish, for 30 minutes to an hour while doing nothing, and like it or not, there are plenty of Amish around.

I can add 810 (highway) miles to my diesel sedan in about 4 minutes.

Any one commenting on EV’s should first become aware of Ohm’s law. You need to become conversant with Amperes and Watts, at least. Rapid car chargers use a LOT of wattage, around 10Kw (10,000 Watts) or more. First you will need a bunch of solar panels to get 10Kw, and the other problem is that almost all batteries are degraded (they lose capacity) from rapid charging.

A couple of years ago I took a BMW i3 for an overnight test drive.Got it home, plugged it into the wall and 12 hours later it had something like 20 miles.

I agree. I wouldn’t take any mass transit ride in a big city these days..

I’ll do it during the day in Manhattan, but that’s it for me. The idea of FORCING us into those Third World s-holes is no different than simply DEPORTING us to the countries where the Amish came from...and likely worse than that.

Spoken like a true New Yorker.

The Amish came from Switzerland and are the finest most productive people you will ever come across.

so the 20” wheels adds 3seconds???

Whether they know it or not, only people who hate the planet as much as themselves, and beyond all reason, buy electric vehicles.
No exceptions.

I have a commercial fuel account and use the hi-speed diesel pumps. Takes a little more than a minute to put 22 gallons in my truck (24 gallon tank).

People tend to eat at least one meal during a day’s travel.

If I'm by myself I get it to go. Something simple you can eat with one hand and won't drip everywhere.
