This is the terrifying moment a Norwegian cruise ship with British tourists on board was struck by a 'rogue wave', sending passengers sliding around the floor and knocking out its power during a ferocious North Sea storm.

MS Maud was sailing some 162 miles off Denmark's west coast and about 217 miles off Britain's east coast when the monster wave shattered its windows on the bridge. VIDEO AT LINK

A rouge wave is caused by several waves combining together to form a wave much larger than those surrounding it.

I served aboard a destroyer. It was perfectly normal during winter in North Atlantic.

"There are no floors on ships." You are correct in that the floors they are talking about are called decks. However, there are floors on a ship. They are vertical structural components (longitudinal stiffeners) which run parallel to the Keel from FWD to AFT.

Yep, it's the North Sea, alright.

And how many wind farms and oil rigs are out there? Some one has to work and maintain them.

Your dad probably mentioned more than just the violent pitching. I’ve heard guys tell of the ships creaking and groaning giving them nightmares.

Took an Alaskan cruise on a name line and the wind was blowing heavy. On the first night they slowed the ship down so the performers on the stage for the opening night performance wouldn’t fall off the stage. Before the show they locked all the outside doors to the deck and when the show was over, all entertainment stopped and they ask everyone to retire for the night.

During the night my wife and I were in the center of the bed, face to face, with pillows wedged at our backs to stay in place. And after the first few minutes we took everything that was not tied down and put it in the shower and shut that door. So nothing even the loose lamp, was free in the room except us and the pillows. Didn’t sleep much as the ship was in all kids of positions.

In the morning, they wouldn’t let us on the departing gang plank for excursions saying there was a problem with customs. As this was coming and going from a US port there should not have been any custom problem. We found out later they were moving the injured and hurt off the ship to hospitals and didn’t want the other passengers to see it.

About a dozen people with cuts and bruises, broken bones, one a hip, and a couple of heart attacks had their cruise ended. The line should have cancelled the trip but they love their money and will always find someone to take it possibly unsuspecting like us.

There are social media sites for cruises. The biggest, most well known is Cruise Critic. I post a lot there. Here’s the point: do you have any idea how many would protest/complain about cancelling the trip?

Several years ago, there was a series of terrorist attacks in Israel and multiple cruise lines cancelled port calls there. Cruise Critic was alight with complaints. ‘They should have let us make up our minds if it was too dangerous.’ Of course, these would have been the first to file suits for compensation if they were injured in an attack.

“Was it a rogue wave?”
_______
I think not. It was similar to the others. Some of the waves that are “rogue” waves are much different and higher than those that come before or after. Sometimes coming in relatively “calm” seas.

It was a lone wolf wave. The fbi missed it again.

Sounds like a mighty wave if it shattered the windows on the bridge.

No way of knowing. I do know that the group of passengers that were around us in the stairwell before being allowed to get off the ship at the first excursion were not happy. I do think if they had offered not to take the cruise for the weather problem and told the passengers what might happen, and did, a number of passengers would have cancelled as at least a dozen were hurt and they tried to hide that by getting them off the ship unseen. Scuttle gets around on shipboard so everyone found out and there was an air of distrust of the crew after that.

Airlines don’t give notifications of rough flights or other weather effects. Why would cruise lines?

One issue would be returning those who wished to cancel to the US. Most of those ports in alaska have very small airports. If they cancelled the whole cruise it would be a complete nightmare arranging transportation.

Now, if you’re talking about a pre-cruise cancellation, no cruise line is going to offer something like that. Pre-cruise cancellations would require a complete refund plus a very significant amount of compensation. almost unaffordable. That’s incredible rare even during hurricane season in the gulf.

Poor housekeeping, not properly secured for sea. Time to work on your sea legs. Break out the saltines and hang on.

In the mornings, all the troops were ordered up on deck and were secured with ropes to the structure of the ship. Sailors had to go through the lower decks where the troops had slept to firehose out all the vomit. A couple of times the ship listed to the point where the soldiers took a dunk in the North Atlantic.
