Halloween brings us the official start of College Football Playoff season.

The first set of CFP rankings are set to be released on Tuesday night as we're about to get a glimpse of how the committee sees the college football landscape through the first nine weeks of the season. There will undoubtedly be a few surprises; the committee typically has some variance from the AP Top 25.

With the initial rankings looming, we figured the conclusion of Week 9 was a good opportunity to try to predict what the committee's top 12 will look like.

As usual, there are teams that ought not be in top ten. It seems like strength of schedule doesn’t matter.

I’m a little surprised, my Longhorns as high as they are, given that they were shut down three times within 3 yards of the goal line yesterday by BYU.

Here's my analysis looking at last week's top 10 from the AP.

Among the unbeatens, Georgia has looked good, but against only 1 ranked opponent (ironically Kentucky). Washington also had only 1 ranked opponent.

Michigan has looked good, against exactly zero ranked opponents.

Ohio St had two ranked opponents. As did Florida St.

Then there are the 1-loss teams. Oklahoma had 1 ranked opponent.

Texas has had 3 ranked opponents (now we're getting somewhere). So has Bama.

Oregon has had 2 ranked opponents. Same for Penn State.

Kudos to the Longhorns and Tide for playing a real man schedule (at least so far) and their lone losses being close ones to ranked teams. They have my respect.

We'll see what Georgia looks like in the next few games playing 3 ranked teams in a row. Then, of course, the SEC championship game against a ranked opponent (Bama or LSU). Basically we're getting to Georgia's put-up-or-shutup portion of their schedule. If they look good through that then they've earned my respect. Washington also has 3 ranked teams left. Eventually Michigan will play 2 ranked teams (at least they are now).

"Eventually Michigan will play 2 ranked teams..."

...without knowing their play calling in advance.

All I care about this week was that the goal post got thrown in Potter’s Lake.

Not sure who you mean. It’s not as if JMU and Air Force and Liberty are in the top ten. Because of my son (who years ago just loved the wolverine mascot), we root for Michigan. #2 in the nation. They haven’t played a single quality opponent all year. But they have destroyed all of their mediocre opponents. A number of the 1-loss teams just outside of last week’s Top Ten lost: Oregon St to unranked Arizona; Utah got DESTROYED by Oregon; North Carolina lost to Georgia Tech.

Since you said “top TEN,” I’m guessing you are NOT referring to Notre Dame. Every year, some ignorant hotheads bitch that Notre Dame has a week schedule, but they typically have more top 25 and fewer bottom 50 and FCS opponents than just about anyone. This year, they’ve faced Ohio St, Louisville, Duke and USC in the Top 25. (Who’d figure Clemson would be 4-4?)

OSU running game Ranked 10th in The Big Ten. Non running QB, and missing Henderson...until yesterday. Defense looking good not giving up the big play. Winning games they should. I like what I'm seeing.

Hell, PSU knew UM would run it on every play last year. Just like OSU knew they would the year before. Both schools musta stolen their signs. Lot of good it did them......lordy you people are delusional.

I had a pretty good guess, but your comment confirms things thanks to poster names. The sooner it was confirmed the better.

I saw a picture of a goal post going down with a caption noting that this was not a celebration or an act of violence, but obeying a Kansas law that forbids free-standing man made objects higher than 16 feet.

Deon lost again. Talks God and racism in the same sentence.

Still he’s the Pied Piper. Not just to the black athletes that want to follow him. Just look how sold out the home games are. He’ll leave for a bigger stage and the state of Colorado will go back to the way it was. The question is when.

You seem to be right on the bigger stage. Given that, my guess is it will be either the SEC or the Big 10—probably The Big 10.

Michigan next season?

As I lived in JRP my freshman year, I spent many an hour around that lake.

Georgia, Ohio State, Florida State, and Washington all remain unbeaten (as is JMU! and Air Force!). The Top Four seem obvious. Oklahoma.... beat Texas, lose to Kansas.

I am a life-long Washington Husky fan. I am glad they are unbeaten. But I don’t think they will stay that way.

They have at least three teams left on schedule that will really be gunning for them, and have a good chance of beating them. At USC. At Oregon State. And Washington State will, even more than usual, be very highly motivated to win.

If Washington doesn’t win the final pacific conference championship, I sure hope Oregon State does. It would be a nice “eff you” to the conference that fell apart around them.
