‘Black Bear’s Presence’ Found on the Summit of Yosemite’s Half Dome

Hikers from all walks of life flock to Yosemite’s Half Dome. Many are young; some are old. And at least recently, a select few are bears.

Yosemite National Park posted on its Facebook page Tuesday that park rangers had found “evidence of a black bear's presence” on the summit of Half Dome. A Yosemite spokesperson declined to elaborate on the evidence or when it was discovered. Advertisement

“Yosemite bears are excellent climbers and can easily tackle the 46-degree angle- no cables needed,” the post reads.

Rangers took the sighting as an opportunity to remind hikers that bear safety applies throughout the park.

Half Dome is one of Yosemite’s most popular hikes, though it’s accessible only via a permit lottery, and no more than 300 hikers are allowed beyond the base of the subdome each day. (“Hikers” here refers to humans, of course.) Half Dome’s cable route is also especially challenging and notoriously dangerous; in 2019, a woman died after falling off the cables.

Hikers should always keep backpacks with food within arm’s reach. If you encounter a bear, “act immediately to scare it away” by yelling and standing tall, the park service advises.

No black bears could be reached for comment, either.

“Do bears poop on Half Dome?”

This political correctness in the tile is hilarious. Why are we even falling for this childish crap?

Look at the photo and imagine the ice grinding down that rock and creating the valley and sheering the rock that was to become half dome.
