The last “big one”-level movements in California’s recorded earthquake history are the 1857 earthquake in the central third of the San Andreas and the 1906 earthquake in the northern third...that’s not to say there haven’t been major earthquakes since then.
The 1989 San Francisco-area earthquake and the 1994 Northridge earthquakes, for instance, were both devastating and destructive shocks...
The impact that a large earthquake has, whether it’s a 6.5 or an 8.0, largely depends on the proximity to urbanized areas.
The southern San Andreas is particularly of concern for experts when looking at places that are overdue for an earthquake above a 7.5, impacting areas like San Bernardino, Palm Springs and Imperial County.
That portion of the 700 mile-long fault has not had an earthquake around that size in magnitude since about 1690...
But scientists are also especially worried about...the Hayward fault, which runs directly under cities in the Bay Area.
With these two areas of concern for seismologists, there are a number of potential scenarios that could play out in the earth’s crust – some of which could look a lot like the catastrophic, magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Turkey and Syria due to similarities in the way those faults are set up compared to California.
One such lesson is the potential for a “doublet” earthquake, or additional earthquakes triggered along nearby faults to one that has a “big one.”
The Hayward fault would be a candidate for a secondary earthquake that is dynamically set off if an earthquake, like a 7.4, were to hit in Southern California, she said, considering how much stress has already built up between the plates – mirroring what was seen in Turkey.

At 7.8 in the LA area, they would have to wait until tens of thousands of fires burned themselves out. Then the looting and cannibalism starts.
The LA area is so spread out—issues would probably be localized.
SF is the worst place to be in “the big one” imho—especially since things have gone downhill there since the last big quakes.
Born and raised near one of the BIG Kalifornia fault lines, just bsouth of San Francisco. ‘They’ have been stating ‘The Big One’ since I learned how to hear.

Riiiiiiiight, our construction is on par with Turkey? Some of the newer skyscrapers have been built to roll and sway, but not fall (yes, yes, a big enough quake will topple almost anything).
During the 1989 quake I had a grip on a door jam inside the house. When the big wave came through, the house came out of my grip. Crazy.

IDK... having to dig through rubble for a rolex or gold coins? That’s very hard work for most free stuff types.
A 7.8 would destroy much of the infrastructure in S. CA. then the fires would take out much of the rest. Serious damaging aftershocks would go on for many months possibly triggering other faults..
Sylmar and Northridge were 6.6 and 6.7 quakes. I was 50 miles away from both and both times I thought that this was The End.
One point on the Richter scale means a quake 10 times more powerful and those Turkish quakes were beyond that.
I have insomnia, so listen to a lot of Coast to Coast. A lot of the guest experts think Da Big One is going to be in the middle of USA, the New Madrid fault. That would be right through Missouri... I’d sure the Hell rather be in a little town in Missouri than in Los Angeles in a 7.8!

I remember all the flat-as-a-pancake highway overpasses and all the crushed cars and people. :(
I’ve been through a 3.0 when I was living in San Diego in the early 80’s. Knocked stuff off of walls and shelves and moved furniture away from the walls, but I just thought it was a very large truck passing by. I found out later from the Land Lady that it was an earthquake.
The Northridge one was wild. I lived in the hills above the Valley and was looking at the water fly out of my pool. Sounded like a freight train in my kitchen.
Yep. I’ve seen it rock so hard, chandeliers swinging so violently they chip away at the ceilings, with parked vehicles bouncing off the ground in parking lots.
Attended a briefing from LA City Fire Department some years ago.
The PIO stated in clear terms that under the right conditions (specifically dry and windy), tens of thousands of people would find themselves running for their lives from out of control fires.
His recommendation: copy all your important documents to a thumb drive and wear it around your neck like dog tags, because that is all you be able to save.
(Of course that was before “cloud” storage.)
I remain skeptical.
I lived in Southern California years ago and the area is huge and really spread out—larger than my current state (CT).
It would be like claiming something would “destroy” CT—makes no sense.
The Northridge quake was a good example—totally devastated Northridge but had minimal impact for most of the metro area—just scary shaking.
Well if looting happens does that mean reparations are off the table? Steal free Sh!t or get free money? Seems like good trade.
