NASCAR Pocono winner Denny Hamlin disqualified, first Cup Series DQ since 1960 First- and second-place finisher disqualified, giving win to third-place's Chase Elliott

Pocono NASCAR Cup Series winner Denny Hamlin and second-place finisher Kyle Busch were disqualified Sunday after their cars failed post-race inspections.

"There was some issues discovered that affect aero in the vehicle," said Brad Moran, managing director of the NASCAR Cup Series, widely considered the top auto race league. "There really was no reason why there was some material that was somewhere it shouldn't have been. And that does basically come down to a DQ."

Hamlin was the first Cup winner to be disqualified since April 17, 1960, when Emanuel Zervakis' victory at Wilson Speedway in North Carolina was thrown out because of an oversized fuel tank, according to ESPN.com.

Both racers' Toyota cars will reportedly be sent to North Carolina for further evaluations at NASCAR's research-and-development center.

The official victory was handed to third-place Chase Elliott but the results can be appealed. Elliott now sits in first place in the official NASCAR rankings.

Hamlin and Busch are part of the Joe Gibbs Racing team, which can appeal NASCAR's decision.

Look up Bozi Tatarevic on Tweater.
He’s a crew guy in IMSA who has a lot of experience with this stuff. There were some drawings illustrating what was likely done. The fact that Gibbs didn’t appeal the decision is pretty interesting.

There are exceptions, of course, as some names have no gender affiliation. A friend of mine long ago in the late 60’s dubbed his 67 Mustang ‘The Gray Ghost’.....................

Kyle’s salary is so big, he’s likely out of the job once the M&M money goes away. Apparently they are the biggest sponsor deal in Nascar these days.

I don't have much sympathy for the Gibbs’ Team on getting the two cars DQ’d. IMHO, it was a deliberate cheat to gain an edge in performance.

A theory….

First of all, aerodynamic forces acting on the cars at speed are enormous. Factors of concern are drag and downforce. Drag slows the car down and downforce keeps the car from flying into the air.

This small, dinky and apparently hidden aerodynamic mod smacks of something identified via numerical analysis computer modeling. Big $$$ are involved in performing this level of computer analysis. Literally millions of calculations are done to measure airflow, drag and downforce. Areas to modify to improve an aero property are identified. There could be secondary mods as well such as the suspension. Note that the two cars were sent to a NASCAR R&D facility for investigation. Big red flag.

If this theory turns out accurate then the Gibbs Team is likely staring at a whopper of a penalty. There would be pain.

They lost me when they went to the moronic mandatory yellow flags, cutting the race into 3 sections. Th3 Bubba Wallace fake noose incident cemented my resolve not to watch anymore.

The fact that Gibbs didn’t appeal the decision is pretty interesting.

Both cars are in NASCAR jail. Best way to avoid more scrutiny is to take your lumps and cut your losses. Interesting there is talk of F1 aero technology bleeding over to NASCAR now that charters are appreciating in value.

The tape pieces were 2” x 5” Packing Tape placed at the edge of the Front Brake Cooling Duct Intakes on the body of the car and then the Wrap (for those that don’t know the cars don’t get painted anymore, they are wrapped in vinyl using a Heat Gun) was applied over the tape.

Someone had to be VERY careful with that Heat Gun to not melt that packing tape while working the Wrap. The Team knew what they were doing and that it was illegal to do so.

JGR is not going to appeal the decision by NUTSCAR.

While people think that the little bit of tape is no big deal it actually is a huge deal. A few millimeters of covering up the Brake Cooling Duct Intake makes a big difference in the Downforce and Handling as well as Fuel Milage especially at a Track like Pocono.

Personally speaking this goes a long way in bolstering My opinion that hamlin and baby busch are cheating little weasels and some or most of the Fab Shop/Team are as well.

How far up the food chain this goes at JGR ?

We may never know. I’ll say at least as far as the Car Chief and Crew Chief, the Aerodynamicists/Computer Simulation and Wind Tunnel Crew members as well as the Wrapping Crew and of course the 2 weasel boys. I will speculate that Coach Gibbs was not in the “loop” but I could be wrong.

The new generation car has provided unparalleled equity leaving more in the driver’s control thus they are being more strict

Not saying they were not cheating, just Nascar has changed their policy of not changing the Winner after a race. Of course I’m shocked to see creative rule interpretation in racing....
