The Tigers led 21-17 in the fourth quarter when the Bulldogs punted.
The ball was kept out of the end zone by one of the Mississippi State special teams players. Another thought he downed it inside the Memphis 10.
However, an alert Calvin Austin III picked up the ball and took off the other way. While one Mississippi State player congratulated another and an official looked like he was calling the play dead.
But …
Before Mississippi State knew it, Austin was in the end zone 94 yards later for a Memphis touchdown.

On the disputed punt runback, Memphis had two players with the #4 on the field at the same time - a penalty. That was pointed out by the television announcers. That’s why some players “change jerseys” during the game, to prevent being penalized for having two players with the same number on the same team out on the field at the same time.
Someone did what?
It's a case of poor coaching, not officiating. Guarantee that everyone from the Special Teams coach all the way down to the water boy gets reamed out tomorrow when they watch the film.
It’s not just “touching” the ball. It’s “controlling” or “holding” the ball until the whistle blows.
If and when a defender touches or slaps the ball from going out of bounds or into the end zone it is not dead, another defender must then possess / hold the ball stationary until the referee blows the ball dead.
I’m sure it would have turned out differently if Commiela had been there to do the Coin Toss.
Memphis had two players on the field wearing number 4, which according to the announcers is illegal and the play should have been dead. The onside kick by MSU was reviewed to see if it went 10 yards and the refs came back with a penalty on MSU, no flag was thrown during the play. Really bad officiating!
The second guy clearly has one knee down, and he clearly does touch the ball on the ground.
The rule might be that the second guy has to "control" the football with a knee down before a fumbled ball is dead.
In other words, the second guy must have his hand firmly on the football - not just touching the football - before the play is dead.
It does not look like the second player ever "controlled" the ball.
Crazy endings.
SMU over La Tech on a Hail Mary
Louisville on a Pick 6 over UCF
And Fresno State beating UCLA in the last seconds.
Whoops - I blew the call in Comment #27
I thought the first player to touch it was on the receiving team and fumbled it away.
After further review, the ANALYSIS in Comment #27 is ruled a...

Umpire didn’t blow
My state kin are apoplectic .
And the opioid of the people continues to mollify them with no end in sight.
Here’s the video;
The official also waved his arms signaling the clock is stopped and the play is dead.
In the Michigan game yesterday two players had #1 at the same time on a play. A penalty was called
Honestly, these football leagues brought this crap on themselves when they allowed plays to continue after a play is ended and have video review confirm that a continuing play is legal even if a whistle is blown. That’s a change that was implemented within the last 10-15 years to address the obvious injustice of having plays blown dead incorrectly, but it eliminates the absolute importance of the whistle at the end of a play that should override all other considerations.
Oklahoma did also.
