When did indoor air become cold and clean?
Air conditioning is one of those inventions that have become so ubiquitous, that many in the developed world don’t even realize that less than a century ago, it didn’t exist. Indeed, it wasn’t so long ago that the air inside our buildings and the air outside of them were one and the same, with occupants powerless against their environment.
Eric Dean Wilson, in his just published book, “After Cooling: On Freon, Global Warming, and the Terrible Cost of Comfort,” dives deep into the history of this field. It took more than just inventing the air conditioner to make people want to buy it. In fact, whole social classes outright rejected the technology for years. It took hustle, marketing skill, and mass societal change to place air conditioning at the center of our built environment.
Wilson covers that history, but he has a more ambitious agenda: to get us to see how our everyday comforts affect other people. Our choice of frigid cooling emits flagrant quantities of greenhouse gas emissions, placing untold stress on our planet and civilization. Our pursuit of comfort ironically begets us more insecurity and ultimately, less comfort.

Oh! Don’t forget all the little governMENTAL “Special Service Districts” like water, fire, irrigation districts. Park Districts, and special little governMENTAL districts call Local Agency Formation Districts. In CA they’re called LAFCO, only there is absolutely NOTHING FUNNY about therm!!!
Oh! I almost forgot the myriad of “Not For Profit But For Exorbatant Salaries and Pension Plans” agencies AKA “NGO’s”
These are equivalent to Multi-Level Marketing corporations that mess up some people’s lives, too!!!
Crichton had two children, daughter Taylor Anne, and son, John Michael Todd.
He was taken too soon, that's for sure. I would've loved to read the book he most certainly would've written about the COVID scamdemic.
It’ll be more like Hunger Games or I Am Legend...
Booster shot zombies. :)
Just another bullshit article.
Can we start by taking the AC away from DC?
If the politicians and other government leeches didn’t have Air conditioning, the world would be a better place.
Come to think of it, this might be why the Supreme Court used to meet in the basement of the US Capitol.
Except for the original cave dwellers there-— go back in the caves and there is natural cooling. Example: Wind Cave in Dakotas. Amazing outward and quite cool wind comes from inside the cave.
That is— 50 feet under the stinking desert (and agree with your description)— it is much cooler. So, many “energy efficient homes” in NM, NV etc. are built down into the ground, and you step down stairs to any ingress door. Surprising also is night time desert temps-— the heat all radiates up and out, at times very cold.
The little twerp lives in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY where summer temperatures get as high as 85.
We wake up in the mornings at 85. Let’s see the little twerp last one day in TX at 110+ degrees before calling Uncle and begging for an a/c.
I f'ing HATE THE NOISE!!!
I’m in Upstate NY. Used a small $15.00 turbo fan instead of air conditioning last year and this year. I’m 77. Never had ac until 1984. Figure I sc****** the utility company out of a few bucks.
“Our choice of frigid cooling emits flagrant quantities of greenhouse gas emissions,...”
Give me a friggin break. This nitwit wants to eliminate refrigeration? Bye, bye freezers, refrigerators, home HVAC, automotive HVAC, and any other devices that use a refrigeration system. There are what; 36+ different refrigerants utilized in today’s society including ammonia?
This dude/dudette is nothing more than an educated idiot. Why don’t you look into the destructive nature of the halons then get back with me dumbazz.
Give me an R-12 system any day of the week and I’ll make you so cold you’ll be whining about it.
Without air conditioning the southwest would be unbearable. Enjoying its benefits right now.
I woke up from my nap for THIS????????????????
...I'll take air conditioning." -- Wood Allen, from "Deconstructing Harry"
Hi.
By just looking at him I can tell he didn’t grow up in Florida without a/c.
Probably had a silver spoon up his butt.

I know I won’t be living around any sports coliseums. God help us when they decide that Rome had a great idea on population control/sporting events
From my comfortably cold dead hands.
There is a lot of harping on air conditioning but not heat.
And the making of them as well as disposal of them, along with all technology, is a big polluter of the planet. But they don’t care. Let us all die of heat stroke.
And all of the South with it’s unbearable humidity.
👍👍👍
