A group was riding in a Stresa-Mottarone cable car -- which connects the town of Stresa on Lake Maggiore with the nearby Mottarone mountain in the Piedmont region -- when it plunged into a wooded area Sunday morning, according to a spokesperson for the National Alpine Speleological Rescue Corps, which is leading the rescue operation.
The accident occurred when the cable snapped just as the cable car was completing the 20-minute voyage from the Lido di Stresa piazza on Lake Maggiore to the Mottarone station some 1,491 meters above sea level at the top of the mountain. The cable broke 300 meters from the top of the mountain, according to local media ANSA. The car then crashed into a wooded area with no direct road access.

Can’t blame this one on the US Navy.

major bummer.
If it wasn’t for the obvious, that first picture would be as beautiful as the second. May those killed rest in peace.
Gotta love immigration!!!
Dreadful. RIP to the victims.
Jaws?
How awful!
Prayers for all the deceased, the injured, and the rescuers.
“Can’t blame this one on the US Navy.”
.... the incident you allude to involved members of the USMC, at the time, I believe, was a department of the Navy.
The men’s department of the navy
RIP.
The place is falling apart.
I guess they don’t believe in having a 2nd safety line.

The event you are referring to happened about 4 hours to the east at Cavalese….still amazes me that the aircraft (an EA-6B Prowler) was able to make back to base.
In looking at the pictures, I wondered how many people could have been in the car and whether there were any survivors. It looks like it will hold about 25 or so.
I see now that there were 15 in the car and the death toll has gone up to 13....
Entropy, weathering, corrosion, hot/cold variation, wind, less than adequate engineering or inspection...sad...all the way around.
The two survivors are little boys. One is in bad shape, the other one will probably recover.
Beat me to it, I was going to mention that.
May the victims rest in peace.
