Bit of trivia: that officer with private Joker there was the American who wanted the Waldorf salad in Fawlty Towers.

That would blow my mind if I knew who the American who wanted a Waldorf salad in Fawlty Towers was. Or what Fawlty Towers was. Or for that matter, what a Waldorf salad is.

Now on to more important matters.

My step grampa owned a bar named The Waldorf Club in Pismo Beach, back in the day.

Early days of Pismo Beach explored

Al Capone, at center, was on a short “vacation” from the law in Chicago when he visited Los Angeles in December 1927. During that time, he took a side trip to Pismo Beach and stopped by the Waldorf Club for a game of pool with “the boys.” //Courtesy of David Gardner

Fawlty Towers was a Brit sitcom with/by John Cleese of Python fame. 12 episodes, very funny.
I tried to visit Pismo beach once but forgot to turn left at Albuquerque and ended up in Ali Baba’s treasure cave.

Wow small world, my grandpa had a few encounters with Al Capone working as a teenager at a gas station in Logansport, IN.

When they found out my grandpa knew how to weld Capone asked him if he could weld the back suspension to be rigid so that no matter how much weight they had in the trunk the frame would not sag over the wheels.

Grandpa got a trip to Chicago and a nice steak dinner for that little favor. Another time Capone and his goons were back at the gas station and decided to have a little fun when they asked him to check the radiator level. They had a fake radiator cap in place and all having a good laugh at him. Well he popped the hood to see what was wrong, and found 2 machine guns mounted under the hood. He quickly closed the hood and didn’t say a word.

Needless to say he was lucky to be left alone. He quickly quit his job and never saw them again otherwise I’d likely have never been born. Grandma, before they were married, had heard the 1st story and felt uneasy about the welding favor. She wanted him to leave and never have anything else to do with that job nor those Chicago goons.
