I, Just This Week purchased a Vizio V-Series 50 HDR Smart tv. (V505-G9)
Here is my problem.
I'll be watching a program and the screen will shut off. (goes black)
There will still be sound but no picture!
Sometimes it happens when changing the channel!
ROTFL.
I prefer Samsung as well, however I've had numerous stinkers from them, Sony, Panasonic, Viewsonic, Vizio, etc. I learned years ago not to judge someone's brand preference since most are essentially the same and its really up to the viewer's preference on what kind of color saturation they like. I personally like Samnsung's color way better than Vizio, while others think I'm crazy. I've seen many Vizio TVs last just as long as Samsung.
” HDMI connectors are extremely fragile and can be broken with even the slightest amount of pressure.”
Fifteen years of pushing and yanking HDMI cables and nary a failure!
I'm probably a little too rough with them as I have broken dozens over the years.
True that...just giving him a backlight tip for the future. Don’t think LED backlights as reliable as the old “CCFL’s”: https://www.electronicdesign.com/technologies/displays/article/21753790/driving-the-backlight-ccfls-or-leds
I do too, having two 32 inchers and one 40 inch.

Nice to meet you, Just This Week. Odd name. Is "This" a common middle name?

Good use of exclamation points! Can't help you otherwise.
Return this new pos and demand a ChiCom TV made in Wuhan.
Our Vizio did the same exact thing. It was the power supply box. 6-7 months out of warranty.
$325 to fix. That was 10 year ago still going strong.
Call Vizio tech support. Save yourself the aggravation of unsuccessful troubleshooting on your own. If they can’t help you, return it.
Is there a reason why you didn’t do this already?
Call their customer service group, they have solved my problems. Friendly and helpful. Call today!
I have a GUESS, it may be a timeout setting to blank the screen after ‘x’ time. Back a bit, there was a ‘burn-in’ problem that was well known with the CRT displays and then with the plasma types. Sometimes these controls remain in the software settings even though modern displays don’t have much problems in this area.
I echo the suggestion to call Vizio Customer Service, they are your first level of help before the return department.
do you have a computer with an HDMI port?. what other boxes are hooked up? fire tv, dvd, soundbar. learn the button sequence to change hdmi inputs and try using a computers hdmi port to see if its the input or the tv. Change to another hdmi input with your cable box. Lastly have you updated the firmware?
Just over a year ago, I bought the Vizio 46" 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos soundbar. It sounded fine watching TV, but the first time I played a movie on a DVD one of the rear speakers started crackling a terrible sound during all the loud explosions.
I was frustrated that I spent $1,000 on the soundbar to have it do this, but I was too lazy to call Vizio about it since it happened so infrequently. Finally, last month I got frustrated enough to call Vizio customer support.
They told me the soundbar was just out of warranty (which I knew), and that they don't sell replacement single speakers. Then they went on to bluff me by saying the rear speakers are serial number matched and won't work with another speaker. I knew this was nonsense since they were connected by a wired RCA phono plug to the subwoofer. Finally, they said they would offer me a 25% reduction in price if I wanted to replace it.
I called a local music equipment/speaker repair specialist who said I could bring the speaker to his shop to check it out, but no promises. We opened it up, and to my surprise I found a screw that got stuck to the magnet at the back of the speaker. It must have picked up a loose screw on the workbench while it was being assembled, and the worker never noticed it. The screw would rattle when the speaker was producing loud volumes.
We took out the loose screw and reassembled the speaker, and it now works like it should have.

It sounds like you might DirecTV (Mrs Afterguard refers to it a DefecTV). We have an older Visio 50” and it will lock up or go dark on rare occasions and getting it back requires reinitializing the DefecTV receiver on that TV.
“I dont tolerate out of box probs and return stuff immediately!”
If the proper/simple hookup doesn’t work, and it did with the older model, unhook it and take it back for and exchange it for a new one.
Same thing happened to me. It will be fixed by a firmware upgrade. It will happen automatically. Hang in there.
I second these thingsit sounds more like a cable box connection issue.
Go through a new set up. I programmed my cable box remote to run the TV, not the other way around.
This has been happening to me as well and our TV is an LG. When in Pluto TV, it will black out, still have sound. I have to get out of it and get back in.
