Measles then and now is a killer

It’s been around for thousands of years.

Between roughly 1855 and 2005, measles has been estimated to have killed about 200 million people worldwide.

2018 world wide close to 150,000 died

In the US vaccination did not start until the early sixties

And those parents were stupid. They put their children at risk for death or severe long term disability

Fortunately my parents were medical professionals. They didn’t do that. Yes I caught measles from someone who had it. I have never been as sick as I was then. I’ve had not H1N1 and Hong Kong Flu. They didn’t come close

In 1960 is was the best and safest option.
Widely recommended by family doctors and grandmas everywhere.

Before vaccines, the parents choices were:

1) let your kiddo get measles as a kiddo. Risk is small. Immunity is permanent.

2) skip 1 and your grown kiddo gets measles as an adult. Major complications and even death MUCH more likely.

Chose 1 or 2.

Smart parents, before vaccines, chose 1.

After the advent of antibiotics in the late 40’s, deaths from measles complications (mostly pneumonia) declined to basically nothing for kids.

See more parts coming in to the shut down US manufacturers?
Got a point about backorders, but I’d guess thta’s ‘about’ all that we want them shipping us.
Both China and US will have to be back to normal to see normal shipping.
Amd then I hope there’s less from China- permanently.

I’m watching bread machine and chest freezer availability.

Both are completely sold out as far as I can tell.

I’ve got a site up for each that tells me when they’ll ship. Every day, that date skips one day further into the future.

Current dates are end of May and early June.

We are talking about the USA here. The Measles ravages places where there is no immunity. The USA, since her birth, has had wodespread immunity fro Measles.

Pre-vaccine Era:

In the decade before 1963 when a vaccine became available, nearly all children got measles by the time they were 15 years of age. It is estimated 3 to 4 million people in the United States were infected each year. Also each year, among reported cases, an estimated 400 to 500 people died, 48,000 were hospitalized, and 1,000 suffered encephalitis (swelling of the brain) from measles.

Yes, that's 400-500 per YEAR, vs 1,000+ per DAY. In the United States of America. I know you want to be correct, but even the best of us are occasionally mistaken.

Good idea! Let us know when that changes.

I was gonna check availability of small kitchen appliances on Walmart for a clue.
But I’m so lazy.

Some are still available.

Apparently the panic hoarders are making bread. Writ large. They will be as big as houses.

I have a bread machine. just used it for the first time in a long time last night. Don’t use it very often because we refer to it fondly as the ‘fat maker’.

You left out the ones who impersonate doctors and/or puff their credentials.

Oh, I forgot the fart doctor. I will be sure to include him in the next edition.
