My grandmother made some concoction with horseradish root steeped in whiskey and when the kids got sick, she’s mix it with honey and give them a spoonful.

My mom said NOBODY ever complained about being sick cause they’d get a dose of that but when you were sick enough, you’d get it anyways, and by the next day, you WERE better.

She said it kicked it right out of you.

And this was in Buffalo NY, not the Appalachians.

I have not actually “suffered” from allergies for over 45 years. I just get a stuffy nose, take a gram of Vitamin C and my nose opens up. If I don’t take the C I might progress to runny nose and sneezing, but always keep a small bottle of C in my purse and a small bottle of water to swallow it with.

Maybe not a barrel. More like an elbow jab. But I wasn't looking at it from the angle of retaliating against China.

Point is, all that capacity was already going somewhere.* We can probably force only somewhat higher prices in the US by ensuring adequate domestic supplies, but too much of that artificial interference in the markets likely causes more trouble than it helps. Globally, there is a shortfall that cannot be quickly made up. The Chinese may be able to put themselves at the head of the line when it comes to production they control(?) in other countries, but given the magnitude of the problem that's a partial solution - and only for them - at best.

*I should pun it and say it's all eaten up! ;-)

The meds supply threat is a red herring, I think, unless China is short on supplies for itself. If they are, no one can blame them for putting themselves first. We expect our gov't to do the same. If they are not short, the last thing they want to do is to encourage the US to become self-reliant again.

Sorry for the delayed reply - really busy here...

“These inclulde raising HDL, lowering triglycerides, normalizing platelet function, reducing small particle LDL”

Thanks PA - the above all look REALLY GOOD after all the research I’ve also done on this topic.

The one thing that Statins do accomplish is lowering overall LDL...which is useless alone, and which is why they can’t show any improvements in the health of people who take them.

My cynicism/hatred of the medical community has gone through the roof on this and on diabetes and related treatment (which, I know, you’re up to speed on).

I still appreciate the medical community for many other reasons, as I would have been dead due to my appendix at age 3, be blind today except for lens replacement (but then that was probably due to me being on statins at the time), 2 hernia operations and 2 hemorrhoid operations - all 7 with excellent results! They also managed to keep my wife alive after a really bad childbirth. Life would otherwise suck without their great work.

When doctors do what they understand, they can be AWESOME - when they talk about stuff they don’t understand (usually nutrition-related), they’re no different than actors, just trying to make themselves important - without having a clue as to how little they know.

the money dried up for two reasons
a) yes, they want to see if it’s something that will come back unchanged year after year,
but the biggest reason is:
b) lack of humans willing to become deliberately infected, at a time when SARS had disappeared and wasn’t circulating and with no cure should the volunteers take a turn for the worse. Such act being unethical and likely illegal even with consent.

Food supply here in the “Mid-South” seems to be recovering. My wife follows a local meat shop: They are pushing a big sale of 15 lb. packs of bacon for $2 per lb., and are selling out 4500, and 6000 lb. shipments every day. This is a very small store. Maybe they are not limiting qty’s?

I eat maybe 1/2 slice of bacon a month, but she wants me to get a pack for her and our daughter. Sheesh.

What was I saying about a global pork shortage? One would not know it around here... (Rolling eyes)

The rule of society is politeness and courtesy, both being forms of respect for the individuality of others.

Respecting the premise that one person’s rights end where the other person’s begin
that, is, freedom.
Insisting on rights of a few to engage in dangerous behavior that endangers or insults the rights of others to not be exposed to that dangerous behavior,
that, is, totalitarianism.

Wise people recognize the difference.

I am 81, my cholesterol has been hovering between 220 and 245 for years, but my hdl is high. I just took a Web MD test and they say my risk for heart attack is low. My doctor wanted me to take Lasix, but I told him my parents died at 90 and each had a risk factor that I don’t have, and my paternal grandfather died at 98, and several of his sibliings, 93, 96, and 103. So the doctor stopped bugging me about it. Since there is diabetes 2 and cataracts in the family. Why take the risk? Also, I became aware of cataract formation a few years ago, but I am taking additional supplements targeting cataracts and my vision is improving so I think I have avoided surgery for who knows how long.

My wife (and I, to a certain extent) take care of four folks over the age of 84. My wife is more of a “flu bro”. I am not - and believe this to be a real life-or-death virus.

We both though take the same precautions. My wife is of the thinking “Yeah - it’s no big deal. But, what if I’m wrong and I bring it into my 91 year old friend?”

I hated the idea of paying so much per pound for the Costco “pre cooked” bacon. Then my wife pointed out that the pre-cooked version has about the same number of slices as the “raw” bacon. So the price per slice is about the same, takes up less space, and cooks quicker.

So now we have about 200 slices of pre-cooked bacon in the freezer.

Hmmmm - Bacon!

Wow. Sanity.

What a rare treat.

Actually, at that age, nothing is *Just the _________*.

Any illness, even a cold, has the potential to push them over the edge.
