I stopped in at the Draeger's Supermarket in Menlo Park this afternoon and there was an armed private security guard stationed outside the store with a bullet proof vest on and a hefty sidearm in his holster. I asked him why he was stationed there and he replied that there has been an increase of people hitting stores up to the new $950 misdemeanor/felony limit. He also told of a large gang that hit a grocery store in Mexico City (story below). He said that the police were outnumbered and stood down.
It was a bit of shock seeing an armed police presence outside a high-end store in a wealthy town.
Authorities have tried to reassure residents that this is not the beginning of a wave of looting, saying the supply of supply of food and medicine is guaranteed. Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said at a news conference on Wednesday that authorities are conducting permanent surveillance of social networks in case there are any calls to loot and explained that the thieves targeting shops to steal televisions and the like has nothing to do with poverty.
That did little to assuage the fears of some shopkeepers as criminals organized heists on social networks and instant messaging platforms such as WhatsApp."In the middle of this pandemic in Mexico, it’s incredible people are still organizing looting," a shop owner in populous Mexico state, which neighbors capital Mexico City, said online." I ask authorities to be vigilant because many business owners are afraid of being attacked by looters."
The public security ministry of Mexico state said that on Tuesday it detected 29 Facebook accounts inciting residents to ransack stores that had closed due to the pandemic.

My local stores has armed guards for the first time. I make sure I don’t leave the house with out being strapped anymore.
I loved Draegers. I still have a corkscrew I bought there back around 1999 or so. Way too many ferals roaming in California now.

My local grocery store has one.. I talk to the guy. He said it’s because of people getting into fights over stuff during this mess. It has not been too bad where I’m at in fact people been helping each other in the grocery store but the store has him there just in case.

It's obviously crossing a lot of minds right now.
Of course, I can't see the lone security guard out front opening up and blasting feral crowds looting the place. His presence probably gives the law-abiders a false sense of security. Maybe if there was a platoon stationed out front, it would be a more serious deterrent.

I think the looting will start soon in the LA area.
The usually unruly and defiant group of meth users and pot heads around here seem to be becoming more restless the last few days.

They just had a report here where all the stores are now nearly fully stocked and there are certainly no armed guards. Of course with probably 40 percent of the citizens being armed here, there is no reason for it.
