ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD--No Spoiler Alert
Rotten Tomatoes ^ | 1/20/2020 | Nikos1121

I purchased, not rent, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood last night, and I've already watched it a second time, (I'm off on Monday's.) The movie is fantastic, and will be sure to please those who like witty and fun movies with actors that poke fun at themselves. I think it's up for best picture.

It will also please those of us here who were in High School and College in the 60s. In fact, there's a lot of truth in the movie, as it takes you back to those days. Think Charles Manson, spaghetti westerns, Bobby Kennedy, mediocrity in the TV industry, throwing garbage on the ground, hippies and polyester. I forgot how really stupid those times were, including the music.

Like other Trantino movies you have as many well known faces slipped in to make the scene interesting. Kurt Russel, Al Pacino, Bruce Dern and Luke Perry are all in here, but the stars are Brad Pitt and De Caprio, your eyes will by on these two the whole time. Margot Robbie plays Sharon Tate, better than Sharon Tate played herself.

In short, it's a very funny and entertaining movie with a lot going on.

Mr Kitty and I saw it in the theater. First move in years that we have gone to the theater to see.

We also got the disc through Netflix and watched it several more times. I believe that Mr Kitty is buying me a copy for our anniversary this month.

I’m not a Tarantino fan, but I loved this movie! Who would’t love watching Bruce Lee get his butt kicked? (I won’t say anymore because I don’t want to give away the ending but I wanted to cheer when I saw it)

A lot of where Trantino picks up the actors expressions. I mean Sharon Tate’s character is almost 90% expressions, Cliff Booth too, (Pitt), it’s mainly his expressions, or not knowing what to say.

I watched it. It had me thinking WTF all the way to the end. I did enjoy it though.

Story was dual-fold. Alternate universe of the Manson murders, but I loved the under storyline of an aging hollywood actor being put out to pasture, while at the same time what it was to be a man was being challenged culturally. Even in movies, with the rise of anti-heroes, think easy rider. And it delves into Cliff’s own work when the director wants to dress him up in that style of long hair, drabby clothing. On the set of a western no less.
So much subtlety, I could watch Brad drive through old hollywood for 30 minutes, listening to the old radio program, the old neon signs, not a care. The scene when he is stopped at the stop sign, his own world changing, and the girl crossing the street looks at him and smiles. He knew in that moment everything was gonna be fine. Like the universe was giving him a nod. That 5 seconds personifies his character.
Tarantino nailed it.

I’m going to go back and watch Ocean’s Eleven, Wolf of Wall Street (?) and some others with Brad Pitt or DeCaprio, where I think it’s the same kind of thing.

I mean, I found myself, just glued to both of these guys the whole time.

decaprio ruins it- he doesn’t come across as anything but decaprio trying to be someone else- doesn’t pull it off- it’s not the acting- it’s just his presence- it just screams “I’m decaprio” - Some actors transform into the character they are portraying- but he never did- not in my opinion-

The problem with 1917 was the plot was as thin as a Hollywood Musical. Zero character development, you didn’t really care about anyone in the movie.

Surely you don’t believe that anything close to this really happened?

And the ending...it just ends. That’s just how movies are made these days with very little of anything of value and clearly not a humorous moment.

True. If only Tarantino could replicate the smog. Really bad during that time period

Yeah, I agree with you 100%, (although I think Pitt’s character is name Cliff, right?)

When you watch the movie the second time, you see how Trantino builds Cliff Booth’s character, as being the kind of guy who doesn’t back down from a fight, although, he doesn’t look for a fight.

He lives in the back of drive in movie. You see his weights stacked on bench, I think there’s 200 lbs stacked there.

He has his shirt off, and he’s got the six pack and tattoo.

He’s a little bit off, but a quiet confident guy.

Both of them hate Hippies...

What part did Luke Perry have? Was he Tex?

This is the ending anybody familiar with those crimes wished had happened...

I don't really get Tarantino's deal with "alternate histories". I didn't like it in Inglorious Basterds and this sounds like more of the same.

Larry, don’t wait. It’s a movie that will take you back, and you’ll savor every minute of it.

I think too, you will pick up on the insight here. Like Richard Jewell it tells you a lot about what’s going on today.

This movie, shows the hippy generation, we were dealing with these losers back then, and we’re dealing with them again now.

No, don’t wait. IMO.

Boy what a catharsis this movie is. I mean when you see these hippies getting the crap beat out of them, you’re cheering inside, in a weird sorta way, it’s like finally we get to see people like:

Schiff, Pelosi, and all the other hippies who are grown up now and affecting our lives still.

Right my mistake, Leo’s character, Rick Dalton.
Luke Perry was the protagonist on the set of the western, he was the father to the little girl.
Which, that scene, maybe Leo’s single best acting scene ever. From the trailer looking in the mirror pissed at himself through to the performance on set.

I was not in HS at the time, only a kid but one of the reasons I loved this movie was the music but also the depiction of Southern CA during the time.

Yea he nailed it. I grew up 5 miles from Manson and his crew of miscreants. I had a friend who played in a band and had met several of them. Never Charlie he always sat in the car out side.

Anyway I really loved the ending.

Boy, I disagree. He has a way of laughing at himself.

The scene where he comes back to his trailer, and beats himself up...just like the typical alcoholic he probably is. The other times he wells up, like when the little 8 year old tells him how great that scene was he did.

There are many scenes where, he’s really very funny. Drinking the margharita from the blender, while he’s telling the Hippy to get the bleep out of here.

In fact, I think this movie gets an award for saying the F-Bomb more times than Goodfellows.

Good movie. I think Sharon Tate was treated as an airhead but other than that it was good.

I read a lot of thumbs down reviews but Mick LaSalle form the SF Chronicle liked it and I often agree with him.

The downers, some from QT fans, said the first part of the movie was boring. Are they right or just one dimensional?

And the ending...it just ends.

Really, dude? Don't want to spoil it for others, but when the soldier that did finish the run sat down to reflect on things, that wasn't "just ends" to me.
