TACOMA, Wash. - When Jamie Bisceglia met up with some fishermen who had hooked an octopus during a fishing derby in the Tacoma Narrows August 2, she saw an opportunity for an unusual picture.
"It was a photo contest in the derby. So, crazy me, hindsight now and looking back, I probably made a big mistake," Bisceglia said.
Bisceglia put the octopus on her face and posed. At first, it grabbed with her with its suckers, and then did something she didn't expect. It bit her on the face.
"It had barreled its beak into my chin and then let go a little bit and did it again," said Bisceglia. "It was a really intense pain when it went inside and it just bled, dripping blood for a long time."
Bisceglia said the octopus was a smaller juvenile version of a giant Pacific octopus, although a spokeswoman at the Point Defiance Aquarium says it could have been a Pacific red octopus. Both have a powerful beak used to break and eat crabs, clams and mussels. And their bite contains a poisonous venom to immobilize their prey.
Bisceglia says that venom left her in incredible pain. But as owner of South Sound Salmon Sisters, she kept fishing for two more days before she finally went to the emergency room.
"And I'm still in pain," said Bisceglia. "I'm on three different antibiotics. This can come and go, the swelling, for months they say."
She says the whole painful experience taught her a valuable lesson about handling a live octopus.
"This was not a good idea," said Bisceglia. "I will never do it again."
The day is young...
And we let people like this vote
If you listened very carefully, you might have heard Darwin chuckle.
Wow! Look at the puss on that one!
You would think that a woman who spends a lot of time fishing in those waters would know that you don’t put an octopus on your face. I guess she thought the octopus was a friendly and willing participant in her photo shoot. She was wrong. Or maybe the octopus just wanted her to have the best picture possible.
I’ve eaten octopus, but it never occurred to me to let an octopus eat me.
Stay Wild...Woops
Left off,
Stay Frigen Stupid
The cat could have told her, but...cats often withhold information.
More worser, procreate !!!
So after all that.... did her picture win the photo contest?
One of the more depressing aspects of today’s world is that women have a need to show they can be just like guys...in all ways.
From putting a bottle rocket in your butt to an octopus on your face, they can be just as stupid as guys are.
Great. Because as guys, we are often capable of great stupidity (especially when coupled with alcohol) and it was nice to know that there would be a woman somewhere who would frown on your behavior, and thus give you a chance to recall that frown before you did the stupid thing.
Now, there is nothing holding us back.
She demonstrating the mammalian capacity to learn from operant conditioning. That's about all I can say for her.
Note to self . . .
I learned to scuba dive there. We were warned about handling octopuses. People don’t realize those things are highly intelligent and have extremely powerful beaks, Imagine strapping an eagle to your face, face to face - and then pissing it off.
I hope she got a good picture out of it. :)
And she continued fishing for two more days.
What more can a man ask for?
So many contestants
Her next act will be to pose with a rattlesnake.
I guess she never saw “20,000 Leagues under the Sea” or “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Both featured fearsome tentacled water dwellers with sharp things for mouths.
Her next t-shirt should have said “Stay Stupid”.
