FULL HEADLINE: Multiple wildfires break out across LA: Terrifying footage shows hundreds of firefighters battling to contain growing blazes in Southern California as one man is killed and 100,000 are forced to flee their homes

Saddleridge Brush Fire, broke out after 9pm on Thursday in Sylmar, north of Los Angeles, along the 210 Freeway near Yarnell Street and jumped the highway, according to KTLA.

Multiple freeways, including Interstate 5, Interstate 210, and Interstate 405 northbound were shut down at least partially, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Fire officials said the Saddleridge Fire consumed more than 4,700 acres by 8am on Friday with zero containment. Helicopters made repeated water drops as 1,000 firefighters on the ground attacked flames in and around homes, 25 of which have been damaged so far.

Authorities have ordered mandatory evacuations in the Granada Hills, Porter Ranch and Oakridge Estates neighborhoods affecting about 100,000 people on the northern edge of the city in the San Fernando Valley area.

According to Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Ralph Terrazas, the fire is burning at a rate of 800 acres per hour

Really? Ocracoke Island is most certainly a candidate for either (A) generous funds for being a nice place hit so hard, or (B) zero funds for being stupid enough to live on a tiny island with a high point of 27 feet.

I like Ocracoke Island. Pity it got slammed, and no surprise.

“This is why PG&E (did I get that acronym right?) cut all the power ahead of time.”

Yes, it’s PG&E, but I think they cut power further North, not around LA.

We are about there. WIfe filled stuff for the toilets...we have the older 5 gallon toilets so it take a bit to fill and flush. We do have a well and a hand pump on the well, but it is downhill in a pasture...can be done, but not easy. Or....she can just say screw it and go to the casino down the road. The Indians have generators to power everything! She won’ die, but its a real pain in the keister...

So, following twitter regarding the #PSPS and there was a lot of hollaring about the disabled and how to help them. I get it. But city government just doesn’t have the resources to take care of individual needs...much less facilities.

There was an disabled advocate that was the most vocal, so I searched their eamil down and wrote them...I believe she was out of Berkeley. Just so happens in Berkeley there is a Neighborhood Radio Watch group set up specifically for crisis/disaster situations. I recommended partnering with them to ensure on a street by street level, the disabled and medically challenged, (if I can use that term), have their particulat needs met. It will take citizens and neighbors helping each other to accomplish the goal...not governmental agencies.

We will see if that is a solution, or is it better to scream at the government to do something... Methinks the latter is their path...But I could be surprised. I also said that we are still without power and will remain so...it is cities first and rural folks always last. Because city folk are prone to panic..

“The driver dropped the load by the side of the road...”

Was not that an immensely stupid thing to do?

Here in the Mark Twain National Forest, they allow timber harvesting, $20 firewood permits that allow you to take anything that’s laying on the ground(people follow the logging) and controlled burns. Seems to work.

GoalZero...nice stuff. Looks great for smaller applications and maybe too expensive for the larger applications like running a well or even a fridge. If I were home, it wouldn’t be such a big deal, as we have an RV...but at the moment I am here in Fresno in the RV working. I can take care of things and ensure everything runs smoothly. Wife can do only so much...understandable. She did what she could and for the first night things were fine. Just couldn’t get the generator started yesterday and hurt her shoulder doing it ...Jeez...

And they still won’t allow loggers to thin forests and clear bush because of a family of mice.

I thought that the painfully obvious lack of proper firebreaks was totally insane when I lived there fourty years ago.

Same here, same timeline. Proper fire breaks would at least slow the fires down.

I didn’t catch any coverage on the sources of the other fires. The trash truck cannot get credit for them all, obviously. Every fire season we have a few common sources of fires, including a burning vehicle by the side of the road, or sparks from a mower, etc.

Daily Mail showed houses near the fire with their lights on (street lights too), so not in a blackout area.
