I petted a male Maine Coon at a cat show. He weighed 23 lbs., no fat on him. He had a head like a small cantaloupe, plum sized paws, and a purr like a Harley. I put my face right up to that big boy’s whiskers and was rewarded by a PURR that about knocked me backwards. Right then and there, I vowed that my next cat would be a Coon. Never regretted that decision!

I'd love to have a cat like that. I'm one of those people that cats just tend to like, and I like them back.

I believe cats have a greeting and possession issue. My big black male rubs up against me and bites softly to say hello. He will let me rub his ears and grab me if I pull away. Push my hand towards him he’s happy. My little grey tiger rescue project started out wild and a runt in her sibling group. She is demanding and only likes rubbed on the head occasionally any friendly petting is greeted with teeth but she sleeps next to me frequently. I’ve had a variety of cats and dogs, mostly rescues. Each has their own personalities and the separate species attitudes. I’m thankful domestic cats are generally small. If they got too big it wouldn’t be safe to be around them.

Yup, my Maine Coon was the most laid-back, happiest cat I’ve ever seen. Never any fuss, always glad to meet new people, especially kids, good friends with our dogs, who always seemed to treat him with a certain measure of healthy respect. I miss that cat - up in cat heaven he’s probably relaxing and occasionally still acting like a goof-ball.

It was my fault, mainly. I was downstairs shooting pool and he was asleep on the stair with his back to me. I guess I didn’t aproach him at the right angle when I reached over to pet him, and I startled him. One of our current gaggle is a big baby. He’ll do what we call a ‘flomp’ - he’ll lower his head sideways and do a flopping shoulder roll onto his back. Most cats would shred you if you went for their belly, but this one will let you dust the counters with him. LOL He’ll actually pull your hand back to him with his paw if he doesn’t think ‘you’ were done scratching and tickling him. I’m the only other male in the house (four female cats and my wife), so he generally tends to hang out with me in the evenings. He also comes into the den here just to push my buttons. He’ll get up on the bookshelf and put his paw on something, then wait until I notice him. I’ll say, “No, don’t you do it!”, and *bip* he knocks it to the floor and runs just so I’ll chase him. LOL People think cats are dumb (and so did I, until we ended up adopting this pile of rats), but if you start to think like a cat, then you realize they’re smarter than people give them credit for. They just see reality from a cat-centric point of view.

I hope he attracts interest for people to adopt other kitties that need good homes and nice people to take care of them. People should also not avoid black cats. We have three that are great mousers and brave snake killers as well as being exceptional little family friends. The one keeping me company now is about 1/3 the size of that monster but he is a mighty hunting cat.

26 pound cat!

That can feed a family of 3 for a week.

Definitely looks like he has some exotic in him, but he is also obese. It is unfair to cats to make celebrities of obese cats, because stupid owners then feed their cats for the notoriety.

The top one just looks like a big Main Coon cat, but the bottom one has sadly been fed to obesity.

they are all maine coon cats- some mixed i think though- the fat one does have a lot of fur though which is common with htese cats- but it is overweight too- these cats liek to lay around alot- they will go out on the prowl every now and again- but they sometimes aren’t a real active cat

They may be particularly so, but the average cat of course is a big sleeper too.

Great post! Your babies sound so loved. We have a feral it took us years to tame. Now she’s a big house baby. I was on the board of the local humane society & I can back up your statement: black cats & black dogs are the left behinds. So sad.
