When the base closed it became home to the Air Force Reserve Command’s Fourth Air Force Headquarters and various units of the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, California Air National Guard and California Army National Guard.

And it has degraded into what appears to be a crack town (I was stationed there in the 90's and visited again 5 years ago or so - what a change!)

..“repair it” after it “lands” on its own without a pilot. Those might be some extensive repairs.

Had one of our Navy jet trainers actually do that deed...

During a training flight the engine quit, pilot/student attempts at restart were unsuccessful so they ejected (just as the engine finally started by itself) and the plane wound up neatly landing on some salt marshes fifty or so miles down the coast.

Took us a week or so to finally locate the aircraft but we got an Army heavy lift helo to come pick 'er up and then shipped off for rehab.

Got the plane back a couple of months later as I recall and as far as I know it might still be flyin'.

We didn't call Grumman the Bethpage Iron Works for nothin'.

I read they were worried about ordnance.

Don’t know if local fire fighters would even be aware of the hydrazine.

I’ve either read that story or a similar one. What a testament to stable and balanced aircraft aerodynamic design!

That is so cool you were there on the recovery team!

So loaded with armaments and at least some fuel, crashes into a building and no fire. Hey, I’m glad there wasn’t a fire, but I’m having a hard time figuring out why.

I know hydrazine is used in rockets, but what is it used for in an F-16?

full hazardous materials response because the aircraft was loaded with ordnance

And because F-16’s have hydrazine onboard.

The hydrazine powers the EPU which gives an aircraft controllability when it loses an engine. (only one engine onboard)

The Emergency Power Unit keeps the hydraulics and electrical systems functioning, and provides bleed air where required, for about 10-15 minutes depending on demand.

The F-16 is affectionately referred to as a lawn dart. Statistically, one a/c is lost about every 30 days world wide.

If it had live weapons, it was a NORAD alert bird.

The tanks have a fuel inerting system that dumps Halon into the fuel cells.

That’s some clever engineering. Looks like they could just crane the wreckage out through the same hole in the roof. The insurance adjuster is probably gonna have a great story to tell at the next insurance adjusters convention.

Businesses in the area have been forced to shut down until further notice, along with the Riverside National Cemetery, where 30 ceremonies scheduled for Friday had to be moved elsewhere. No homes were impacted

Even the dead are inconvenienced.

Too bad about the plane and it will cost to repair it or get a new one,

I wonder what the insurance deductible is....

Are there any non-military F-16 fighter jets out there?

I want to cry at times for what the media is doing to our beautiful language.
