The fact that Notre Dame was itself the object of trashing by the French themselves in the Reign of Terror, the Cathedral desecrated by renaming it ‘The Temple of Reason’ and being used as a garbage dump for years should relieve one of thinking it is representative of anything but a religious past largely marginalized post-revolution.
