Greenland’s Melting Ice Nears a ‘Tipping Point,’ Scientists Say
New York Times ^ | January 21, 2019 | John Schwartz

Greenland’s enormous ice sheet is melting at such an accelerated rate that it may have reached a “tipping point,” and could become a major factor in sea-level rise around the world within two decades, scientists said in a study published on Monday.

The Arctic is warming at twice the average rate of the rest of the planet, and the new research adds to the evidence that the ice loss in Greenland, which lies mainly above the Arctic Circle, is speeding up as the warming increases. The authors found that ice loss in 2012 was nearly four times the rate in 2003, and after a lull in 2013-14, it has resumed.

The study is the latest in a series of papers published this month suggesting that scientific estimates of the effects of a warming planet have been, if anything, too conservative. Just a week ago, a separate study of ice loss in Antarctica found that the continent is contributing more to rising sea levels than previously thought.

Another new analysis suggested that the oceans are warming far faster than earlier estimates. Warming oceans are currently the leading cause of sea-level rise, since water expands as it warms.

Four times 0 equals 0. We are all going to die.

Just wait, Viking ancestors will launch competing claims for ancestral prime farmland in Greenland

Warming oceans are currently the leading cause of sea-level rise, since water expands as it warms.

Then why does an Ice cube tray expand/protrude when the full cube bin water freezes ?

And conversely why does water boil over a pan.

Damned good questions.

Well here are the answers via this Calculator

I input Temps of 40 starting and 20 finishing resulting in a change of .0986/.0014

20 starting and 40 finishing resulting in a change of .101/-.0014

The change in Volume is the same both ways.

“October 10, 2018
Three major melt events during late July and August brought the 2018 Greenland melt season to a close. Overall, conditions on the ice sheet were slightly warmer than average for the second half of the summer. From October 2017 to September 2018, continued heavy snowfall on the southeastern coast resulted in near-record snow mass added to the ice sheet.”

“As noted in the previous post, exceptional winter snow accumulation and heavy, summer snowfall, drove the net snow input mass to 130 billion tons above the 1981 to 2010 average. This was followed by a near-average melt and runoff period, resulting in a large net mass gain for the ice sheet in 2018 of 150 billion tons. This is the largest net gain from snowfall since 1996, and the highest snowfall since 1972.”

“Scientists say”

I posted a while back on another thread about detesting scientists, and I got roasted from many posters on FR. It seems that most “scientists” are all political. Maybe because they derive their income from the government teat?

Back in 1910 one of my relatives was a child laborer as a 'greaser' on the tipple at Bessie Mine, of the Sloss-Sheffield Steel and Iron Co. in Alabama. He died years later in a mine cave in as his older brother had a few years before.

I had coal miners in my family on both sides.
