Tesla Model 3 In Europe Will Come With A CCS Charging Port [EU standard]
CleanTechnica ^ | November 14th, 2018 | Steve Hanley

Posted on 12/09/2018 12:38:56 PM PST by SunkenCiv

On November 14, Tesla officially unveiled its Model 3 sedan in Europe and began inviting customers on the Old Continent to place their orders for the most affordable vehicle in the company's lineup of all electric cars... left-hand-drive versions of the Model 3 are expected to be available in Europe in the first half of 2019 with right-hand-drive versions coming available in the second half of next year.

That's good news, but what is really exciting for many living there is that those European-spec Model 3s will come equipped with a CCS charging port, giving Model 3 drivers many more opportunities to charge their cars. CleanTechnica readers have noted this after talking to Tesla staff, and Tesla has confirmed more broadly as well.

Tesla currently has 430 Supercharger locations in 23 European countries, but providing access to existing CCS chargers will add 5,500 more charging points for Model 3 drivers to use...

Tesla has begun adding CCS cables to its Superchargers in Europe in addition to the DC Type 2 connectors that are already standard equipment beginning at Supercharger locations on the busiest routes. Future Superchargers will be fitted with both types of cables. Tesla is expected to begin making CCS adapters available to Model S and Model X owners in the near future so they can use CCS charging equipment as well. The price of the adapters is expected to be around €500.

Note that Tesla already offers CHAdeMO adapters, which is how the Tesla Shuttle Model S and Tesla Model X in the picture below were able to fast charge at the GreenWay station in the photo. And there are cables for 22 kW charging that are available for the non-superfast CCS charging available at these stations and others.

Electricity rates in Europe are much higher than US rates.

Gasoline is taxed to death in Europe, but as we know, no one goes into tax collection out of a sense of public service. H.L. Mencken:

“All-wheel-drive Tesla Model 3 will have 338-mile range”

How many when the heater is turned on? Air conditioner?

The software that operates the car is reportedly pretty great, and when it crashes (ew, not a good term) and reboots, the car is still operable, that must be a plus. :^)

Rates vary on electricity. There's an automatic change in rate (at least in California, reportedly) if the user doesn't let the "tank" get too low before charging up. And the charge rate, at the supercharger station, slows down the longer the charge takes, to avoid overheating the batts. The "gas cap" pops open automatically as the human approaches with the charger "spigot", and glows green when the charge rate is "super".

As I wrote in the Jaguar topic yesterday, if they address their build quality problems, they're going to be in great shape. They'll be in even greater shape if they make a two-seater EV they can sell for $25K or under, because they'd sell by the jillions, leaving buyers with more money to spend on long trips in gasoline vehicles. :^)

Air conditioning use will reduce the range, just as it reduces the range of the gasoline vehicle. Then the car display tips off the driver, and shows the new range and the supercharging station in that range.

“My Mac has had a CCS charging port for years...what’s the big deal?”

Are CCS chargers intended for electronic devices? If so, charging a Tesla would take about 40 years.

“Once electric cars become more common, to the point of cutting gas tax revenue, expect them to be taxed.”

Is the fuel taxation to suppress use of personal vehicles or to suppress pollution?

“Air conditioning use will reduce the range, just as it reduces the range of the gasoline vehicle.”

Good point, but heating a gasoline vehicle adds not cost as it uses waste engine heat.

Also, range is more critical in an electric vehicle since it takes hours to refill.

I’d love to have an electric vehicle but would also have to have a gas powered one for longer trips. Therefore an electric car is out of the picture for now.

“All-wheel-drive Tesla Model 3 will have 338-mile range”

What’s the point in all-wheel drive in a sedan? Isn’t the cost of the Tesla an obstacle to sales?

Tesla will declare bankruptcy about a month after the Trump Admin ends the subsidies for EVs and hybrids.

Moot point.

Go back to yelling at clouds.

No, actually, Tesla won't. Go back to yelling at clouds of gas in your own ass.

“Then the car ... shows the ... nearest supercharging station”

Wowee! It tells you the nearest place where you’ll spend the next 4 or so hours.

“supercharging” - a little hype in there, huh?

Hate is an ugly thing.

The 220 vt home version will charge the car in 3 to 4 hours. Meanwhile, superchargers:
L3 chargers adjust their power levels based on temperature, battery capacity, battery state of charge, and other factors to protect the battery. L3 chargers provide peak power when the battery is warm and nearly empty. Charging at L3 rates is an intricate dance between the electrical grid, car, and charger.

As a general rule of thumb about how long it takes to charge on a Supercharger, think of it like this:

- 20–30 minutes to go from 20% battery remaining to 80% full.
- 60 minutes to go from 20% battery remaining to 95%.
- 90 minutes to go from 20% battery remaining to 100%.

What does that even mean? Particularly since that was in response to air conditioning.

Drive 4 hours; rest 1.5 hours to “refill the tank.”
Repeat, repeat, repeat.
It would be like driving cross country in 1915 all over again.

Electric cars make a lot more sense in densely populated Western or Central Europe where distances are smaller - or in the Boston-Washington stretch of the USA. Electricity can be cheaper here once they get the continent-wide grid up so that solar power from Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece and wind power from the north sea can cover most of the continent’s energy needs.

“Tesla superchargers”

First, SunkenCiv, where did you sense “hate” in my posts?

I see that a Tesla supercharger is a real thing that operates as you describe. A 120kW charging rate is huge. A whole-house generator does about 12kW. A fully occupied charging site with 15 stations would use as much juice as about 100 households.

You ask what does it mean to say: “heating a gasoline vehicle does not cost as it uses waste engine” heat”. Let me know really need an explanation.

You ask why I mention that since you had mentioned only air conditioning. I mentioned it because you failed to comment on heating, which is a larger user of energy than cooling.

I don’t understand why Tesla doesn’t sell electric delivery trucks and the like that could run a known route during the day and be recharged overnight. Those just might sell like hotcakes, but they’re not sexy.

Therein lies the Tesla strategy. Electric vehicles aren’t cost effective. Sexiness is the major reason for their appeal.

Highlights from Musk’s 60 Minutes interview
Dec. 9, 2018 7:38 PM ET
By: Clark Schultz, SA News Editor
https://seekingalpha.com/news/3415479-highlights-musks-60-minutes-interview

Elon Musk made it clear right up front that he doesn’t respect the SEC.

The CEO handpicked Robyn Denholm to be his replacement as the Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) chairman.

Musk said he didn’t have a happy childhood.

He called the Model 3 introduction an American success story, while conceding that the ramp was a life-or-death struggle.

There’s also some rehashing of the all nighters at the Fremont plant that have been reported on previously.

Musk took CBS’ Leslie Stahl on a test drive that included using Autopilot.

Musk “guessed” that the $35K Model 3 could arrive in five or six months. Are you a doubter? Musk conceded that punctuality isn’t his strength.

Taking over a GM plant sounds interesting to Musk if an opportunity comes around.
