Tesla hints at when its $35,000 Model 3 will actually arrive

Tesla released its first-quarter earnings report on Wednesday, and hinted at when the $35,000 base model of its Model 3 sedan will become available.

In the report, Tesla said it expects to start making around 5,000 Model 3 vehicles per week "in about two months," so around July. After the company reaches that threshold, it said it will make new options available to Model 3 customers. "After achieving a production rate of 5,000 per week, we will begin offering new options such as all-wheel-drive and the base model with a standard-sized battery pack," the company said.

Tesla states on its website that it would roll out the option for the standard battery Model 3 in late 2018, but it was unclear when the company would actually begin production given the delays.

The Model 3, which launched in July, is touted as a more affordable alternative to Tesla's high-end sedan, the Model S, with a $35,000 base price that would make it competitive with mass-market electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Bolt. But customers who have the option to configure their Model 3 can only purchase the long-range version with rear-wheel drive, which starts at $49,000.

In April, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company would likely start producing the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive, version of the Model 3 in July. Musk was responding to a Twitter user who claimed his Model 3 "has been sitting in the configuration for months waiting on" the dual-motor option and asked when Tesla would start producing it.

Tesla had planned to make 5,000 Model 3 vehicles per week by the end of 2017 when it launched the vehicle in July, but it adjusted that goal after making just 2,425 Model 3s during the fourth quarter.

So they went from a planned 60,000 vehicles to 2400? That is a huge production fail. Hitting less than 5% of your production goal means there's something seriously wrong with your process..

Sounds like he is trying to keep the people from demanding their money back which would probably bankrupt him.

"200 thousand spontaneous fires sounds a bit high...According to the National Fire Protection Association there were 174,000 car fires in 2015, the last year they have stats for. They actually have stats going back to 1980 when there were 456 thousand car fires."

OK. Will give you 175k. That is close to my 200k number plus there are probably a bunch that are not included in the NFPA data base.

"The overwhelming majority of vehicle fires were caused by accident... A car colliding with another car or object. "

Only if you think the 3% number as provided by the NFPA is an overwhelming majority ...

And 445 deaths. According to the NFPA that is 12% of all US fire related deaths.

“Musk’s model 3 has been vapor ware for many months.”

500 units a day is not vapor ware.

“And today it’s more important to be safe and comfortable. I get it.”

When combined with sub-12 quarter miles and handling that would shame any 60’s muscle car!

Yes, but I miss the simplicity of the old muscle cars. Today’s cars have 30 sensors on them that feed into a computer that determines everything from spark timing per cylinder to the amount of fuel injected in each cylinder.

“Yes, but I miss the simplicity of the old muscle cars. “

Like needing a two-universal socket rig to remove a spark plug.

Like being twenty miles out from town and finding out that neither your 1” or 1 1/4” socket will fit the failed block temperature sender.
