Woman Mauled By Bear In Montana Walks Miles To Safety With Skull Fracture (doin' her "dream job")

A 28-year-old woman who finally earned her “dream job” working as a grizzly bear researcher is now recovering in the hospital from serious injuries after she was attacked by one of the powerful animals.

Amber Kornak, a seasonal wildlife technician with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, was mauled by a bear while working alone near a stream in the Cabinet Mountains of Montana on May 17.

Kornak was able to reach for her canister of bear deterrent during the attack, which allowed her to fend off the animal and save her life, her friend Jenna Hemer said on a GoFundMe page set up to help the injured animal lover in her recovery.

Despite the brutal attack leaving the wildlife technician with two skull fractures and multiple lacerations to her head, neck and back, Karnak mustered the strength to walk nearly two miles — bloody and in pain — to her work vehicle to find help.

Once medical personnel responded, Hemer wrote, Kornak was life-flighted to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, where she went through four hours of surgery to remove bone fragments and clean the wounds to her brain.

Once at the hospital, doctors placed metal plates and screws in Kornak’s skull and used drains to divert the liquid from her swelling brain.

Doctors were able to stabilize Kornak in the days that followed, Hemer wrote in an update, and she has since been downgraded from the ICU and had the drains removed from her head.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Here’s a presentation - by a Trauma Surgeon no less - of his mauling by a Grizzly in Glacier national Park in 2005 (I believe). Presented at the 2017 Rocky Mountain Rural Trauma Conference.

He is a lucky man to have survived not only the attack but the 65 foot fall off of a cliff...

Best wishes to this woman.

Working in bear country without an armed guard (partner) sounds like a bad plan.

In terms of research, she can now claim to have some expert, first-hand knowledge.

What’s with the “go fund me” crap? She works for the federal government, which means she is overpaid, under- worked, has excellent heath care benefits, and has generous workers comp/disability benefits.

28 years old and she's going out alone. A simple fall or cut or snake can take you out.

28....and no common sense.

No kidding. And what’s with the measley $15K goal? The treatment described, plus whatever she’ll need henceforward, won’t stop at $50K or more.

The forest services should have a different uniform to prevent this stuff... it should be a black uniform with one or two white stripes running down the back and come with a fuzzy white hat.

Works for skunks. Even really stupid skunks.

The only thing they would have to worry about is getting attacked by great horned owls.

Having worked for the NPS in the past -- I can't comment on whether she's overpaid but considering her line of work, I doubt she is underworked. In my experience the people who consider their day booked after eating lunch, getting a haircut and mailing a letter aren't the ones in the field. I definitely worked my butt off, and I knew a couple of biologists and an oranthologist who worked and stayed out countless extra hours just because they were truly passionate about their jobs. Granola-munching lefties, but they definitely worked.

Whether the taxpayer shoulf be footing the paycheck for a guy who lives in a blind for days at a stretch studying the flight patterns of water fowl might be another question to ask, though...

Yeah, “dream job” = go out and hike around, look for bear poop or just goof off and get complete bennies but the occasional grizzly attack - sounds poorly planned. GoFundYourself, lady.
