Ive been thinking about the first time McCain ran for president in 2000.
It was the absolute best political event I ever covered. Not sure it was entirely a race, since he was up in New Hampshire for months and months all by himself, just going to town meetings and talking about campaign-finance reform.
It was what everybody imagines an underdog campaign would be like a few reporters and the candidate, driving around in a bus, telling jokes, talking about issues, and of course arguing about where to eat dinner that night. But it was also a crusade McCain thought if you reformed the way politicians raised money to run for office you could change the world.
And he won! New Hampshire that is. Went on down to South Carolina for the next big primary and everything changed. He was actually a pretty terrible front-runner. Lost the primary, lost the nomination. Went back to the Senate and passed that campaign finance law, which was pretty much destroyed by the Supreme Court.
So I cant say there was a happy ending. But there was certainly a moment.
His talents were much better used as a senator than as a presidential candidate. And Im glad that his last big political moment was that vote last year against destroying the Affordable Care Act, and giving Donald Trump the political equivalent of a middle finger.

Imminent death doesn’t erase that.
We did not deserve the treachery of John McCain, his worst offense being the Designated Loser ushering in the Kenyanesian Usurpation.
That’s like my plan for the royal wedding - Food Network or something. Anything.
If we can see this why cant everyone?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Everyone with their eyes open can see it.
The Ministry of Propaganda has an alternative narrative.
Oh yeah, the wedding. Not interested, dont care.
It’s going to be Meghan.
It is indeed a travesty. The man should have been in jail as opposed to being lauded. Or better yet, hung by the POWs that should have been brought home, but he ensured that didnt happen. I always wondered if he couldnt face them or was afraid one of them would finger him.
The only reason The Slimes cares about McStain is because of his nasty and petty rants against President Trump. If he wasn’t their reliable Hate Trump Goon, they would totally ignore him.
I remember being so thoroughly disgusted witnessing this twice in the early 90's. The first was when Lee Atwater, who engineered Bush 41's victory over Dukakis, was dying of brain cancer, and the libs were rejoicing ... gleefully predicting his imminent arrival in Hell (as if they even believed in it), with one joking about Atwater's "exploding brain".
Then a couple of years later, Anna Quindlan danced happily on Richard Nixon's grave until Clinton pooped on her party by merely doing the same thing every single President has ever done when an ex-Prez has died == ordering flags lowered half-staff at Federal facilities. She really went ballistic on Clinton, having fully expected him to make a historic, precedent-shattering exception for the target of her volatile hatred.
And I thought to myself, "Well, *that* is one clear difference between liberals and conservatives."
Oh well. Guess I'll erase the check-mark in that box. But hey, at least we do much better on 90% of the other items.
because I expected him not to make it through his term,
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obviously overly optimistic.
McCain deserved a prison term for taking bribes from S&L crook Charles Keating. We never should have heard from him again.
Is he dead yet? They are setting him up as some kind of heroic good guy when he is really just a part of the deep state problem
Remember the false crap when that fat drunk, Kennedy died. I mean really. The guy, killed a girl. Obviously lied about it. Evaded the law numerous times even before that. Cheated in college. A total loser who was sainted upon his death. Expect McCain to get the same treatment. While Thatcher was tossed in a box and dumped as fast as possible.
McCain was a shill for the military complex, especially the missile and bullet makers. He was otherwise a democrat hiding behind his war record and rich wife. But when you look back at the fact that he crashed his planes three times. Was a horrible student. Caused the death of several military men. He had a hair trigger violent temper. He would have made a horrible President.
So he devised a plan to stomp on the 1st Amendment and prohibit free speech during political campaigns and called that pile of s#!t Campaign Finance Reform.
What a hero! (spit)
Of course Bret Stephens of the New York Times would NEVER vote for McCain... McCain was fun for him because McCain was always willing to trash his fellow Republicans... and express hatred for everyday Republican voters.
The kind of Republican the New York Times boys like...
I guess Hannity might enjoy riding around reporting on a Democrat who was always ready to give a juicy quote trashing fellow democrats. Playing him up for kicks... But that might be too creepy for someone on our side... Hannity has too much decency to get off on that stuff... Apparently Bret Stephens is incapable of shame ... or empathy.
Ever since they mis-applied the word "Reform" to campaign finance, I am automatically suspicious the first time I hear this word appended to the name of any other issue.
It was no surprise to see "Immigration Reform" used the first time. I instinctively knew what the MSM meant, before hearing the definition.
"Prison Reform" generally means reduced sentences and earlier parole.
"Voting Rights Reform" translates to nationwide ID-less voting and Motor Voter.
What's next? "2nd Amendment Reform"?
Yes, God, we don’t deserve Senator McCain. Take him from us and deny us the pleasure of his presence.
How did I know this was the New York Times before I even looked?
The nySLIMES is one with mclame . ..losers all on sooooooo many levels.
Put him up for re-election and we will see just how much he is admired...
Doesn’t the line out of the movie go:, “we all got it coming, kid,... We all have it coming”? I have always kept that close to the surface, since I heard it years ago, and attempted to live so it’s not true.
(Not that anyone needs the Clint Eastwood hint....)
