Cannes (France) (AFP) - Hollywood star Salma Hayek said Sunday that male stars will have to take pay cuts if they are serious about equality for women.
The Mexican-born actress, a leading voice in the #MeToo and Time's Up movements, said highly-paid male stars would have to make sacrifices.
"It is not just the producers" who have to change if the huge pay gap is to be closed. "It is actors too," she said.
"Time's up. You had a good run but it is time now to be generous with the actresses," she told a Women in Motion talk at the Cannes film festival.
"If actors ask such inflated fees it will leave nothing for actresses. If the movie's budget is $10 million, the (male) actor has to understand that if he is making $9.7 million, it is going to be hard for equality," Hayek added.
"Otherwise they will kill the movie," she warned.
"I will be hated for saying this," Hayek joked. "I hope I can get another job..."

She has already won the “Golden Globes” and a billionaire.
She’s not a star. She’s closer to being an extra.
We know where she’s invested her money.
Sad to say, but her breast measurements match her IQ.
Or, get all the other women to go on strike until you get what you want. That's when you find the 'sisterhood' falls apart. They would gladly take your job for a lower wage while you are striking.
Maybe she should tell her billionaire husband to take a pay cut too. He’s worth his current net worth is estimated at about $17.3 billion.
She married a billionaire, she'll be fine.
I guess these feminist equality beings will soon demand that WNBA
“stars” get the same paychecks that male stars get.
Of course, the camera avoids the stands when a WNBA game is on - why?
Who goes to films to see female leads? No one. Certainly not for Hayek or Blanchett. MEN are the hot demand property, and men deserve to be paid commensurate with their value.
Some people do go to see the female lead if she is a great actress—like Frances McDormand, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Barbra Streisand (Oscar for “Funny Girl” and really good in “What’s Up, Doc” and “Yentl”).
There are others, but these are top of the list. I don’t care for their politics, but they can definitely act and carry a movie all by themselves.
She’s married to Billionaire. She doesn’t need the dough.
The fake boobs must be affecting her math skills.
If the movie’s budget is $10 million, there is no way the male actor is getting $9.7 million.
Why limit it to actors and actresses? I never got paid as much as Selma. When is she going to sacrifice so that I may enjoy more luxuries in the name of equality?
Capitalism does not allow someone the ability to tell someone else how much they can make.
I never would join a union because I wanted to negotiate my salary myself. That should be everyone’s goal, to do and be paid for the best you could do.
Back to my original complaint, the left hates...HATES the word individual.
This equality crap is all about Cultural Marxism. Redistribute. Redistribute. Redistribute.
It is Salma’s husband, François-Henri Pinault, who began his virtue signalling after seeing the playwright the Vagina Monologues in 2006 with Salma and meeting with the playwright, Eve Ensler. In 2008 Pinault created the Kering Foundation, to defend and promote womens rights. In 2015 he created the Women in Motion program with the Cannes Film Festival to address how women are “under-represented and disadvantaged in the film world, despite their priceless contribution to everything that makes cinema what it is.”
Pinault is like many of the big rich in America who engage in virture signaling using Left Wing causes to innoculate themselves from Virture Shaming.
They should put their money where their mouth is and make some movies. Then they can pay all the actors/actresses whatever they want. Nothing is stopping them. Just go do it. And shut up in the meantime.
Big deal.
I had a very similar situation a couple years ago. I was one of the best employees in the region, but my manager at my location valued me too much so he wouldn’t let me promote to the regional team or anywhere else. Unfortunately, I put up with his bullshit for a good two years before I finally quit. And they’re still hurting for good video engineers, I keep up with some of my old coworkers and they say they’re hurting, and the few other guys that were close to my level have since also left, or are getting ready to. Go figure.
