Cannes (France) (AFP) - Hollywood star Salma Hayek said Sunday that male stars will have to take pay cuts if they are serious about equality for women.

The Mexican-born actress, a leading voice in the #MeToo and Time's Up movements, said highly-paid male stars would have to make sacrifices.

"It is not just the producers" who have to change if the huge pay gap is to be closed. "It is actors too," she said.

"Time's up. You had a good run but it is time now to be generous with the actresses," she told a Women in Motion talk at the Cannes film festival.

"If actors ask such inflated fees it will leave nothing for actresses. If the movie's budget is $10 million, the (male) actor has to understand that if he is making $9.7 million, it is going to be hard for equality," Hayek added.

"Otherwise they will kill the movie," she warned.

"I will be hated for saying this," Hayek joked. "I hope I can get another job..."

Oh please -you are such a martyr Selma and an idiot.

It female actresses are serious then they should demand higher wages or actually be worth the money they’re demanding.

The simple fact of the matter is that they’re NOT.

Yeah, Selma. I’m sure big box office draws like Cruise, Stiller and Pitt will take pay cuts just because YOU say so. [/s]

How much did Oprah get paid for the recent bomb, “A Wrinkle In Time”?? Do we then have actresses give back when their movie bombs and loses money?????

No. That’s up to the director and the actor, not you, Salma.
What you describe sounds like emotional blackmail, bordering on extortion.

It’s all about who can open a movie. Few female stars can draw and open a movie, there are a few. Most films depend on a established star to open and most of that time it is a male.

The ladies can talk about this all they want but that is the reality. I want to know for instance what female stars would pull you into a movie to see, who is that kind of draw?????

As I frequently wonder: Why is this even a story?

Or, Selma, just trade agents with the lead, and see if you have a lousy taste in agents. Or maybe it is that pretty faces who can act are easier to come by than handsome men who can act, and thereby have lower pricing power?

If women are on the average better actors, and fewer men are at that level, the men will have better pricing leverage.

Why cut the pay of the men? Why doesn’t each person negotiate their own price?

I had a couple of reasons to like her. then she opened her mouth and burnt my ears. Now she has ruined any chances of getting a date with me. Adios jalapeno breath.

Who are super star women? Meryl Streep? Cher? Oprah? Diane Keaton? Barbra Streisand? Anybody big enough in the women’s side to open a movie?

Women definitely have a shorter lifespan in Hollywood, but for the most part, you can get the big bucks if you can prove you can bring in money. Gal Godot made a measly $300k for Wonder Woman, but now that she has proven she can fill seats, she can ask for and receive the big bucks.

Robert Downey Jr. makes insane amounts of money, last time I heard more than $40 million a picture. But the MCU is practically built on top of him, which brings in billions. No woman is going to get that kind of money from Marvel, even the new Captain Marvel character., until she can prove she is the reason people go to the theaters.

Talent should be paid for——NOT GENDER.

I once walked from a job I had for over 4 years because I couldn’t get transferred into a higher job category, etc. The company structure was: The opening supervisor had to want you & the current supervisor had to be willing to let you go. This was intra-company transfers.

I had 5 different openings where the new supervisor wanted me, but my current supervisor said “You do too much work & are TOO VALUABLE to me to let you go”.

Nice words, but not a pay increase.

I finally left the company for an entirely different place. It took 2 1/2 people to replace about 80% of the work I did. Many accounting reports were no longer prepared.

That was 43 years ago, and it still feels good to have done that level of accurate work & volume.

“I had a couple of reasons to like her.”

And what, pray tell, could those two things be?

Most of those you mention are in the past.
I am not sure who in today’s world can open a film. Julia Roberts was hot for while but no longer.
The shelf life of a good female actress is not as long as a male. Angelina Jolie was okay but she only had a few films that she opened well. Not so much anymore.

Why don’t the women of Hollywood pool their pay and then apportion it out to one another evenly. LOL!

Did someone tell Selma that the international film business has a finite amount of dollars in it? Maybe she was getting her boobs plumped during 11th grade economics?
