ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) - Investigators believe a 38-year-old St. Pete man died after a vape pen he was smoking exploded.
The St. Pete Fire Rescue was called to the fire on 19th Avenue near 3rd Street around 9:45 a.m. Saturday and found the body of Tallmadge D'Elia.
Lt. Steven Lawrence said a vape pen had exploded on the second floor of the home, sparking the fire and leaving DElia with injuries on his face.
An autopsy will determine if the explosion killed DElia or if it knocked him unconscious, trapping him inside the fiery room. Investigators are also trying to determine the brand of vape pen he was using.
They have lithium batteries in them and they can start to heat up and, if they heat up too quickly, then, the gas will ignite or explode," Lt. Lawrence explained.

Mom always said that smoking is bad for you.
It’s his choice - a quick death from vaping, or a long, painful one from lung cancer.
It’s fully his own PERSONAL CHOICE, as it should be.
We had a guy here lost an eye when one exploded.................
Here comes one helluva law suit.
“A misfire, Mr Cochran.”
RIP
They said something on Fox 13, Tampa last night that people sometimes tamper with the batteries on these things but I didn’t get the gist of what they were talking about.
There’s a Looney Tunes clip somewhere.
I would bet a hefty wager that he modified his own vape.
WHAT a rush! Max Righteousness!!
Some vapers make modifications to the vape for all sorts of things, an many times this leads to things like this.
As a WATCHMAKER I very often get requests for battery changes. For some time now I have REFUSED to either have the lithium batteries in my shop, nor will I install them.
We save old, dead batteries of the little button style, and can hve them reccled by people in that business, but the lithium.
I have a jewelry store customer who was in the habit of putting silver oxide batteries in an empty pickle jar. They began to put old LITHIUMs into another jar, loose and contacting each other. One afternoon the lithium jar suddenly heated and blew up. Thankfully, damage but no injuries. They are a clear danger.

modified his own vape
That was my thought have a guy here in the apts that does vap and that wax stuff, the wax burns super hot and my guess is the guy placed dab or wax in the pen to make it burn and it burned alright.
Was he smoking the wrong end?
Connecting it to a Car battery will not make it work better
What the heck is a vape pen?
With apologies to Ernie Ford:
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hate to make him wait,
But you gotta have another Vaporette
Yikes. RIP.
People mod them to put out giant plumes of clouds. I don't know exactly how it works but that's the intent. Stuff stinks bad too.
