4-year-old nearly loses eye after family's newly adopted dog attacks

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. - A 4-year-old Caldwell County girl was attacked inside her home by the family pet Wednesday.

Family members said they had just recently adopted the dog from the humane society in Catawba County.

Justina Turner, the child's mother, said she and her daughter were in the living room of her home south of Lenoir when the 3-year-old 60-pound dog suddenly attacked the child, biting her face. She said the dog bit down so hard on her daughter that she wasn't sure at first how she was going to get the animal off her.

Turner said the dog nearly ripped her daughter's right eye out, and the girl had to get several stitches around her eye.

"I was in such shock,” Turner said. “I didn't know what was going on. Once I got the dog away from my daughter and saw the blood, it was the most terrifying thing I've ever seen in my life."

The dog is in quarantine for 10 days to be checked for rabies at the Caldwell County Animal Shelter.

Turner said she didn’t know the dog posed a threat because it seemed friendly when she adopted it.

"They really didn't tell us much about the dog,” Turner said. “They just told us to pick out a dog and to take it to the play yard to play with it. The dog seemed kid-friendly."

The humane society handles all adoptions in Catawba County from the intake to temperament screening prior to adoption.

"They're around these animals every day,” said Paris Wright, a visitor at the Catawba County Humane Society. “They see their temperament. They see how they carry themselves. So, I figured that's what they would be able to give me insight and they did."

Humane society officials said an adopted dog can act differently once it's in a home and around children.

Turner said people need to be careful adopting older dogs.

"I just want him out of the house,” she said.

The Catawba County Humane Society adopts more than 1,000 dogs each year and has not had an issue like this.

The dog had been in the human society for more than two months prior to being adopted.

Stupid mom. You don’t get a sixty pound dog when you have a four year old particularly from the pound

On a big dog attacking, shove your fist down its throat then with your other arm on the back of the neck, force the head backwards and break it’s neck.........You’re gonna have major bites on the throated arm but you will have stopped the attack........Another ploy is using the forearm to absorb the attack and doing the same thing.........

If the dog has a death grip on your child, how are you going to get anything down his throat?

If it had been a cocker spaniel would the story have made the news?

Start under the tail, at the anus, move forward, you’ll eventually hit the throat, easy.

“Stunning” cattle for slaughter is what leaves the meat full of blood and shock hormones, making it a poor choice as food.

“Nor do I.
All dogs can bite.”

I grew up with Shelties, and ours were feisty, to say the least. They would fight each other, and to break it up you had to reach in to grab one dog and pull it away. Plenty of blood, doing that.

I got bit by a Chihuahua, when he got scared somehow, spun on my face, and drew a lot of blood.

And strange dogs can simply attack for no reason. I got bit by a big dog in a public parking lot for absolutely no reason. When I started scolding the owner, an Asian appearing guy, he started in calling me a stupid American.

That dog bite didn’t hurt me, but it tore my walking shorts. When he mouthed off, I dialed the Police ‘dept, and the guy sped out of the area, lest he have to answer for his dangerous dog.

I generally stay 5-6 ft. away from a strange animal, and request permission from the owner to make friends and approach their animal.

Of course many dogs will run right up to you, seeking attention and petting/rubbing. Even then I keep my face away until the situation settles. I recently got scratched by a big puppy Pit Bull. He was playing, but his size and sharp claws drew blood.

Pounds require that all dogs adopted out be spayed or neutered. It’s not just about population control. Most people shouldn’t own unaltered dogs. They’re different from the altered “stuffed animal” that is a fixed dog.

What is upsetting here is the Humame Society recirculating dogs that they know are dangerous as hell. Sue them to the ground!

All right. I had heard of something like this at one time, now that I thought about it. I went to look at the AKBAN video on this technique at Youtube. I had never seen it demonstrated. It was demonstrated on a GSD.

If dog has a kid, take your pocket knife and stab it in the throat and work your way around until you sever the carotid artery (note, I’m talking about doing it to the dog, not the kid)

“Dog needs to be put down immediately. Had it been my dad’s dog, (he loved shepherds) it would already be dead.........”

I wish it were not so, but do believe it necessary.

From this site.

The dog groomers I spoke to said most of the bites they see are from Schnauzers, Cocker Spaniels, Westies, Scotties, and Dachshunds.

Next I polled a number of veterinarians. One veterinarian said "Give me a so-called vicious Pit Bull over a Cocker Spaniel, Dachshund, or even a Lab any day!! These are the breeds I have the most problem with." Another vet concurred saying that she never once encountered a vicious Pit bull yet had problems all the time with Cocker Spaniels and Yorkshire Terriers.

This was not a dog for a family with a 4 year old to adopt. There was a reason it was in the pound for 2 months. Probably other more dog-experienced people had passed on it because they saw subtle behaviors she had not picked up on. It’s a shame that it will probably be killed because of this woman’s stupidity.

Yup, I would kick it so hard that its heart would stop and its back would break.

Any animal attacking an innocent must be handled.

If they had a cockier spaniel instead of a pit the kid wouldn’t had his face mauled.

A Big word if, if a frog had wings he would kick his ass every-time he hopped. If there weren’t any bit bulls a cocker spaniel biting a kid might just make the news once every 2-3 years when and if it happen. but the cocker would of bit and that’s it and the kid would be treated and released with no need of facial surgery.

Next I polled a number of veterinarians.

I haven't read of any accounts of Schnauzers, Cocker Spaniels, Westies, Scotties, Dachshunds or even chihuahuas mauling people to death.........

Although it is rumored that there is now a roaming pack of MS-13 chihuahuas infiltrating this country.......
