Deaf and partially blind dog stayed by side of 3-year-old girl lost in bush

SUCH A GOOD BOY, MAX! He stayed with his 3-year-old human who was lost near Warwick last night while we frantically searched for her.

A deaf and partially blind old blue heeler named Max kept a three-year-old girl safe while she spent the night lost in Queensland bushland.

Aurora was reported missing after she wandered away from her family property at Cherry Gully, south of Warwick at about 3pm on Friday.

Max, 17, followed Aurora and stayed by her side as she slept overnight in bushland while temperatures dropped to 15 degrees Celcius.

About 100 police, State Emergency Services workers and members of the public resumed their search at first light on Saturday.

The girl's grandmother, Leisa Marie Bennett, heard Aurora faintly from the top of a mountain on the family property, about 2km from home.

She first found Max, who led her to Aurora, who had only minor cuts and scratches.

Our dear old Josie was a blue heeler. That would have been her if needed. When she was at the top of her game she was better than another person at helping Hubs with the cows. We knew she wasn’t well the summer that she died — the cows got out and she backed off when one of the cows put her head down and snorted. She laid down in the sun one afternoon a week or so after that and didn’t wake up. :-( Still missed.

My brother has an old Blue Aussie Cattle dog as well. She’s getting to be in bad shape sadly, but they are very good dogs.

A neighbor's dog stalked a little boy, then dragged him off a bicycle by a leg. The boy's cat came out of nowhere, and hit the dog with all four feet—then chased after the dog for good measure. I think the cat sized up the situation correctly from a just-opened front door.

Birds have slaves

I don't know how smart birds are, but, I'm kinda thinking that, it's either smarts or dang good instincts that have them working hard to defend their kind... for example....

A baby bird fell off his nest from disturbances caused by landscaping people at the house next to mine. The baby bird actually fell onto my front yard

I didn't know what my 12 pound dog was barking at, the first time I walked him past some Spanish moss and he went to investigate. 3 birds swooped in on my dog and tried to scare him away, and my dog would not budge. So, I pulled him back into the house and thought nothing more of it. I had also noticed that the birds chased away a cat that had also been curious.

Several hours later, I walked my dog again, and after he was done doing his thing, he immediately went to the same area and started barking again at something under the Spanish moss. The birds swooped in again, trying to scare my dog away, and he still wouldn't budge. I called my wife out to see what our dog was barking at, and she got close enough to notice the baby bird on the ground, slightly covered by that Spanish moss. We figured that the baby bird would survive on its own, especially with the parents defending him and actually bringing him food.

But, our dog would not stop barking at the spot where the baby bird was at, and he actually barked more when he saw the baby bird patents stopping by and bringing food to the baby.

So, some guilt came over me after noting that it was getting dark and the baby bird might not survive the night. So, me and my wife went out to try to help the baby bird, and I approached slowly so as not to spook the baby bird or the parents.

To my surprise, the parents did not try to attack me, and I actually saw 2 of them watching me as I approached the baby bird. It's like they knew that I didn't mean any harm to their baby. I picked up the baby and put it in a box. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it, but, my daughter, who is a vet, suggested that I take the baby to the nearest overnight vet hospital.

So, we drove 1/2 hour to the hospital for care and feeding, and they said they would turn it over to the wildlife care people the next day.

The next morning, we saw the baby's parents looking under the Spanish moss, and they did that for about an hour before they gave up. I felt guilty then too, for taking their baby away. But, my admiration for their parenting was elevated to levels which I previously attribute to humans and other higher species.

I do wish that there was a way that I could have returned the baby to its parents.

BTW, that baby bird would not leave the palm of my hand once I picked it up, and it was making eye contact with me the entire trip to the hospital, and I almost decided to adopt it, but I felt that it would be better off in the wild.

I used to be on the road and gone overnight occasionally. We had this Newfoundland rescue dog that was the most laid back gentle animal ever. I once saw a kitten play with his ear until it bled and he ignored it. My wife came home one night after dark and for some reason thought there was someone in the house. She brought Jack in with her. He immediately picked up on her suspicion and would not allow her into a room ahead of him. He went into each room bristling and snarling, all 135lbs of him. She told me that had she been an intruder she would have pissed herself and jumped out the window. After the house was secured and she had lavished him with praise and a treat he laid down and went to sleep.

Sounds like Savanna Cats. They are big, and they like to fetch. They can also be walked on a leash.

There was a saying way back when, that sometimes guardian angels have fur and waggy tails. I believed it then (I’m 67) and I believe it now.

I will always remember a news story from several years ago where an abandoned infant, left in an alley, was kept warm and alive by a stray dog that found it and snuggled with it. First-responders said that had the dog not done that, the infant would have perished over the night from hypothermia. One of the EMTs said that the dog stood around for a few minutes after the EMTs arrived, but at a distance, as if making sure the baby would be okay, then it took off.

Mine are leash trained as well. Would love a savanna cat. I truly am a cat whisperer. For some reason they follow me around. When I say NO!!! they stop what they are doing. When I meow at them they meow back. When I purr they also purr. They are sitting about two feet from me. Just purred at them and backatcha boss man.
