Killer Cat

Folks I have a killer cat that has killed more birds, mice and squirrels than you can imagine. She has a pet door that allows her to come and go as she pleases. She just brought me, unharmed, a baby rabbit. The animal kingdom is hard to understand at times.

They're a protected species

Tell that to the magpies, crows, owls, squirrels, coons, skunks, bobcats, wolverines, bears, fox and woofs that prey on birds, baby birds, birds' eggs and, for that matter, birdbrains.

My cat Pee Wee got one eye pecked out as a kitten because he wouldn’t leave the rooster alone. Since then, he has killed many dozens of birds, frogs, mice, and moles. Plus chipmunks, squirrels, and several snakes.

He and Professor Boodles and Lulu (the dogs) team up on moles. The cat finds them and stands next to the spot, then the dogs dig them up. How they know where to dig I don’t know.

Currently I have a dead chipmunk and 2 mice in the mud room awaiting disposal. Cats. Gotta love ‘em.

I just took him out and released him. Hopped away and found a brush pile to hide in.

We have a killer Chihuahua that keeps all cats out of our yard. They only come inside that fence one time. We just say “,kitty, kitty” and open the back door. :-)

I don’t have any now, but I like cats. Always have, but... they are first order killers for sport and they rarely eat what they kill.

As such, I really don’t want them in my yard killing the lizards or the birds at the feeders, nor do I want them leaving neat piles of cat piss and poop in my garden and flower beds.

It’s funny how we view some stuff. If a neighbor’s dog was running loose and doing similar things on my property, it would not be tolerated by me or by the city.

There are laws prohibiting it and that also make the dog owner responsible for all damages their dog might do while running free, and most dog owners don’t let their dogs run free for those and similar reasons.

But, while city ordinances view stray and uncontrolled loose dogs and cats in the same way, cat owners, my former self included, do not see nor have a problem with letting their cats roam free.

Fwiw, I wouldn’t shoot a neighbor’s animal in my yard unless it was rabid or was hurting one of mine, but I know other people who don’t have those limits and they wouldn’t hesitate.

Their answer to loose animals on their property is: “Shoot, shovel, and shut up.”

That is so sad. Maybe one day she/he will slow some love. It took 5 years & many stages of trust for her to come in this past Christmas. If someone had told me that she would be lying on my chest purring I would have laughed.

Will hope good things for your feral.

I didn’t pay attention to your nickname during our little spat here, even though I now realize I have looked at it a thousand times before.

I try never to get crosswise with Freepers who have military ties.

My respect and appreciation to them far outweigh whatever my quibble might be—so I tip my hat and bid you well.

p.s. I have flocks of birds around my place, and a small herd of feral cats as well. The cats are well fed and they seldom kill a bird, especially if I put the bird feeders where the ferals can’t get to them-—a high branch, inside a small wire tree fence, etc.

Nature is fierce and vicious.

If cats roam free to kill creatures, we must also support them being killed at times by larger predators.
