I recall the “Reverse Speech”controversy.
At some point, Art became skeptical of this guest who said he could hear otherworldly messages when he played the sound of someone’s voice in reverse. That guest took great offense at being doubted, even slightly doubted, and he was unable to discuss his technique without getting angry.

That guest was never asked on his program again, although he would frequently try to call Art during the program. The audio assistants would never put him on the air.

Does anyone else remember the terror and suspense of the HaleBopp Comet? It flew past the earth in 1997.
Many were led to believe that the comet carried a spaceship within it’s luminous tail. One group believed that completely. 39 members of that group committed mass suicide in order to release their souls, enabling Hale-Bopp to ferry their souls into Outer Space. This from the cult of Heaven’s Gate. Art Bell kept us up to date with the comet’s location.

Makes sense. Cuts down on solar wind resistance.

I also remember sliding my AM dial up and down until I got the program late at night when I was a kid. The shows were always intriguing.

Bummer. I’m a long time news talk, any kind of talk radio junkie. I spent many long nighttime hours driving with his voice talking through my speakers. All he had to mention was “shadow people” and the hair on my arms would stand on end.

RIP. At least he had been off of AM radio for a while, so his listeners weren’t listening to him nightly anymore.

I discovered Art when I got out of the military and came home in ‘97.
I’d listen to his show while on break in my old van at work.
He’d talk about the North Koreans eating their pets, and sometimes babies.
George Carlin was on once after a big earthquake -saying that he wasn’t impressed with Richter scale numbers, and wanted to see a 20.
“I want to see a 20! I want to see continents jump up, flip over, and slam into the earth.”

And, I still have the old C Crane radio that Art talked me into buying.

RIP, Art.

Dr. Demento would say “Wind up your radio” but Art Bell could actually sell you a wind-up radio

RIP Art Bell, I enjoyed his show a lot.

sorry to hear that. He provided some interesting entertainment if one was on the road late at night.

I was listening the night he banned "The Amazing Kreskin!" And his first show after Ramona died. He mentioned staring at a bottle of pills at some point, and some listener called the local police station to report him as "being in [suicidal] distress".

Yep, a cop showed up at his home in the middle of the show.

“C. Crane”: Do you have problems with the display not showing all the segments?

And the the light?

And at least one of the memory buttons?

I used to hear Art Bell in college when I’d be coming home from work past midnight. I gotta give the guy props, he was highly entertaining.

You should try I-10 between Fort Stockton, Texas and Ozona, Texas... about 150 mile LONG straightaway with no lights.

Kreskin always bored me, even way back when I saw him on The Mike Douglas Show. His main act is working with numbers, cards or ‘picking up vibrations’from his audience members.
It all seemed so slow and so predictable. To each his own.
I was waiting for the magician who would ‘saw the beautiful girl in half, separate her into boxes, throw a table cloth over the mess, yank away table cloth to find the girl sitting on top of boxes drinking champagne.

Bell couldn’t differentiate between the occult and Christianity. He left me, or I left him by changing the station, when he would expound on Biblical themes, particularly Bible prophecy.
