The pictures of the ships on pages 10, 12, 13 are very well done. They would certainly arouse fancies of travel in the landlocked reader!

I noted this advertisement:
HEALTH! GRACE!! AND BEAUTY!!!
Conferred upon the LADIES by wearing Douglas’ and Sherwood’s NEW EXPANSION SKIRT with the adjustable BUSTLE (patented April, 1857)
Which has been decided by the best medical authority to be the most beneficial garment ever introduced for the ladies use, the weight being only 12 oz.

I must say, the adman needed to use a singular possessive, Douglas’s, in the second line and a plural possessive, ladies’, in the final sentence.

The “Immaculate Conception” Strong mentioned can be seen in the Harper’s Weekly of January 30, page 17. Link here.

It would appear that Our Diarist is a high church Anglican.

The RC’s are idolaters and the revivalists are just too tacky.

This is reinforcing the opinion I’ve had for years that Buchanan is the worst President in US history, and that beats out some real doozies.

Colorado tanker: "Buchanan is the worst President in US history"

If we consider Buchanan's role in Dred Scott then we must think that Democrat Buchanan was similar to other Democrats (BHO comes to mind) whose goal was to fundamentally transform America into their own visions of what we should be.
As Lincoln said in 1858, the nation could not permanently endure half-slave and half-free, must become all one or all the other.
Dred Scott & Buchanan's purpose was to make us all-slave states.
In that, like BHO, their failure was the country's success.

Of course, it took a Lincoln to overturn what Buchanan put in place.
We're hoping it will not require another Lincoln to make right what BHO ruined.

Two Democrat radical transformers:
