Reston [VA] Man Arrested for Killing his Dog in 2017

A 61-year-old Reston man is facing several charges stemming from a 2017 incident in which his dog was found deceased at an archery range. Officers responded to the private Northern Virginia Archers Club Range, adjacent to Fountainhead Regional Park, on July 15 of last summer after someone called to report they found a deceased dog that appeared to have been shot with a firearm. The dog, a shepherd mix, had a collar, but no tags or any identifying information. Further investigation determined the dog did have a microchip, which led officers to medical records and a possible owner.

Animal Protection Police officers from our Animal Services Division worked with detectives to obtain and execute a number of search warrants related to this case. Evidence uncovered during these searches led to charges against the dog’s owner, Mark Cochrane.

Cochrane was arrested Wednesday by Animal Protection Police and charged with animal cruelty (felony), hunting or discharge of firearms in certain places prohibited, and dumping trash, companion animal, etc., on highway, public, or private property.

AFAIK, cops don’t kill their own dogs

And shelters are allowed to kill with abandon.

The ASPCA kills more dogs than than Clinton has had flirts in his whole life.

I certainly don't support abusing animals, but seriously, doesn't the Reston Police Deapartment have anything more important to spend a year and God only knows how much money investigating than some guy that decided to give him dog the "Old Yeller" treatment?

I’m 64. I can’t count on both hands the number of pets I’ve had to put down in my life time.

This is a strange culture that has laws protecting non-humans that are not the property of others. Just weird.

Wow. Spend tens of thousands of tax dollars to prosecute a man for killing his own dog.

What is next? Prosecute a farmer for killing his own livestock?

The dog owner did not dispose of the dog properly, that is true. But simply killing an animal should not be considered animal cruelty. If it were, all animal shelters should be convicted of animal cruelty on multiple counts every week.

Old Yeller had to be euthanized by his master. A real tear jerker.

I don’t know the reason for the killing of this particular dog. But one shouldn’t jump to conclusions

Yep.

I knew a young man who had a couple of puppies he was raising to be hunting dogs. One of them snipped at his 2 month old daughter. He got his rifle, shot it in the head, and threw it in the woods by the house for the turkey buzzards, etc.

Animals are not people. We are being over-run with PETA dropouts.

When the owner is uglier than the dog that he killed, we know why it happened

What’s kinda funny is the chip led to medical records. I’ve never spent money, other than for food, for a pet. I confess that my wife does go to the vet now to get our dogs’ toes clipped. It’s just too cheap and they do a better job than I do.

If I was the guy I’d say the dog just disappeared and didn’t come back.

Heck, we have a pregnant cat that will disappear for a week at a time. We honestly thought the coyotes got her until she showed up again, big belly, about four days ago. We keep her in the house now until she delivers. My neighbor needs more barn cats.

Yep.

there’s a difference between humanely killing an animal, which is the normal order of things although sad when the need for its death is caused by an idiot human (e.g. not spaying etc) and the occasional psycho who harms or tortures the animal first; the latter are capable of doing to a human anything the do to an animal.

When did it become against the law to kill one’s own dog in a humane manner? Or was the alleged offense the discharge of a weapon in the wrong place.

yes. I love my pets, but they are not my kids, they are animals. there is no comparison altho we’ve had Freepers declare that they are 1 and the same.

It is not illegal to kill your own dog. It is illegal to arrest a man for a non crime.

So, I see with a decent lawyer a cop or two doing time. (most likely time off with pay) because justice is in the hands of the powerful, not the law these days.

I’ve found that animal rights is the one issue where freepers can fight like cats and dogs.

See what I did there? I crack myself up. :-P
