President Donald Trump said Tuesday he wants to create a military force for outer space during an address to members of the U.S. Marine Corps at Miramar Air Station in California.
Trump said he has developed a national strategy for space that recognizes it is a "warfighting domain." He likened his proposed space force to other branches of the U.S. armed forces.
"My new national strategy for space recognizes that space is a warfighting domain, just like the land, air, and sea," Trump said. "We may even have a space force."
"We have the Air Force. We will have the space force," he added. "We have the Army, Navy."
Trump described the space force as an idea he had that was not serious at first, until he continued thinking about it.
"I was saying it the other day because we are doing a tremendous amount of work in space. I said, Maybe we need a new force. Well call it the space force. And I was not really serious and then I said, What a great idea. Maybe we'll have to do that."
Trump then joked that his idea could be the next big story for the "fake news" media to discuss.
"That could be the big breaking story. Look at all those people back there. Look at that," he said, pointing to cameras in the room. "Oh, that fake news."
"Think of that: space force, because we are spending a lot and we have a lot of private money coming in," Trump said.
"Our service members will be vital to ensuring America continues to lead the way into the stars," he said. "We are going to lead the way in space. We are way, way behind, and we are catching up fast...

This, of course, means we will have to establish an official United States Space Force Academy. I wonder where that will be located. It’ll be a plum score for the state that scores it.
Always looking forward.
We have had a “Space Command” for years. It is part of the Air Force.
If they didn’t already have space assets and personnel, they would not exist.
Space cadets?
Yep - the USAF is responsible for space and there is already a separate command. Creating another bureaucracy at the Pentagon is unlikely to increase effectiveness.
Starfleet Academy was located in SF, in the liberal Marin County, but that is all make believe!
IMO, the North Korean nuclear weapon effort was crippled by a kinetic weapon fired from space. (*cough* rods from God *cough*). I think the US is about to begin admitting that the Space Force has been in existence for some time and is now ready to come out from the shadows.
Cue Star Wars music.
Space Mountain is one component of space defense, then there is the Army's Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) as well as other Army agencies, then there is a whole slew of other agencies and organizations who independently touch pieces of space defense (NRO, NSA, NGA, NASA, etc). The issue is that there is lots of redundancy, and lots of left hand not knowing what right hand is doing, so putting this under a unified command and keeping it out of service core missions makes a lot of sense.
I thought the Navy handled Space, and for years that was a secret. They didn’t let the AF NEAR space, which I thought was interesting.
Whatever we do, don’t put anything military in CA. They’ve gone off the deep end.
Glad im not the only Freeper that appreciates the Adeptus Astartes.
Love the idea .... but I just can’t stop saying ‘space force’ the same way as that wonderful Saturday super-hero..... SPAAAACE GHOOOOSSST!
Is that Latin for Alcoholics Anonymous?
James Bond was rescued from an evil villain’s space station in “Live and Let Die”, by SPACE MARINES!
High Gothic meaning Space Marines of the Emperium of Man.
Ooops. It was “The Spy Who Loved Me”.
First mistake of the day. It wont be the last.
