We have had a “Space Command” for years. It is part of the Air Force.
If they didn’t already have space assets and personnel, they would not exist.
Yep - the USAF is responsible for space and there is already a separate command. Creating another bureaucracy at the Pentagon is unlikely to increase effectiveness.
Space Mountain is one component of space defense, then there is the Army's Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) as well as other Army agencies, then there is a whole slew of other agencies and organizations who independently touch pieces of space defense (NRO, NSA, NGA, NASA, etc). The issue is that there is lots of redundancy, and lots of left hand not knowing what right hand is doing, so putting this under a unified command and keeping it out of service core missions makes a lot of sense.
I thought the Navy handled Space, and for years that was a secret. They didn’t let the AF NEAR space, which I thought was interesting.
