A man disarmed a would-be hostage shooter at a church in Amarillo, Texas, but when officers arrived, he was shot twice.
On Feb. 14, the same day the Florida school shooter killed 17 people, a gunman barged into the Faith City Mission during morning church service.
Police said the initial call just before 9 a.m. referenced an armed suspect holding approximately 100 people hostage in the chapel.
Just before police arrived, Tony Garces, a student at the city mission, snatched the handgun away from the would-be killer after others wrestled him to the ground.
I took the gun away from a man who attempted to take others in the church hostage, Garces told Fox News. He already fired off one shot and I wasnt going to let him fire again.

Police are more likely to shoot the wrong person, because they can.

This sounds like BS to me. After he shot the guy with all the people around he would have holstered his weapon. Very unlikely the police were already there and mistook the situation.

And we're just getting news of this now?
I see...it was a handgun AND the cops shot the good guy.
And the good guy shot the bad guy....with a gun...a handgun...the bad guys handgun.
Need more details on the gun...

At least the police rushed in and tried to save the day. Too bad Tony Garces didn't understand the police that well and they didn't understand him not wanting to throw a loaded revolver on the ground.
I blame the criminal shooter for causing all the hoopla to begin with.

This actually happened on the same day as that other Texas church shooting, and we’re just hearing about it now? Well, at least I’m just now hearing about it.

Understood.
By continuing to hold the pistol, didn’t he reasonably expect to be mistaken for the shooter?
He acted heroically, if somewhat carelessly!

He WAS putting the gun down...He didn't want to just drop it as it might have gone off.
He was doing EXACTLY as he was told.
No damn reason why he should have been shot...And I'll bet there are videos...

Holstered his weapon?? It was the bad guys gun...

This is why you throw the gun away from the confrontation so that the police see that (the good guy) is unarmed. Otherwise, how are the cops to know whos who?
This is one reason why it may be unwise to arm teachers. Just sayin

Most LEOs do their jobs according to the rules and laws that govern their official behavior. But relying on law enforcement to always be there or do the right thing can get you killed.
