I’m thinking child porn is the modern equivalent of postal fraud. I’m pretty sure you can find something within that definition on almost any computer connected to the internet. Like you said, a catalog ad, for example.
Having said that, 50k? That’s a pretty big catalog collection.
The Windows image cache can easily hold 50k images.
I suppose that might be considered a collection if that helps a career-minded prosecutor to make a case.

I'm thinking it's the modern equivalent of getting Al Capone on tax evasion charges. Easy to fake, dispels any public support for the suspect, and the sentencing guidelines are very good at inducing plea bargains. An all-purpose blunt instrument to take out people the Feds don't like. Surprised they haven't tried it yet on Manafort and Flynn.
Which says nothing about this guy, who sounds like a major league dirtbag. But lovers of liberty must remain vigilant in an era when our civil masters can't stop grasping at the handles of tyranny.

Yep. I can think of few more effective ways to thoroughly destroy someone than to hang a child porn rap over their head.
I recall a custody case where the ex-wife was caught trying to download child porn on her ex-husband's computer so he'd get hemmed up over it. And the clincher is, the prosecutor will often threaten decades in prison if you take it to a jury or offer a plea of just a few years, even time served, if you plead guilty. An offer too good to refuse.
Want to destroy someone? Get them busted for child porn. They'll be hiding under a rock the rest of their lives.
