The end of the Steeler Patriots Game
Vanity ^ | 12/17/17 | a little elbow grease

Posted on 12/17/2017 5:14:29 PM PST by a little elbow grease

As a Steeler fan who just endured that game:

I only have one thing to say about the ending of that game:

As I understand the rule of a “pass catch” it is when a player 1. --- takes possession of the thrown ball , THEN 2. ---- makes what they call “a football move”. That is what determines a catch. 1 and 2.

(This rule I believe was first employed just a few years ago concerning a catch and a subsequent fumble. A catch was determined a catch if the receiver took control of the ball and then made “a football move” before he may fumble it when hit.) --- a pretty crappy rule no matter what.

Well……….. our Steeler player definitely 1. -- caught that ball and had complete control over it, then 2. --- reached out (IN “A FOOTBALL MOVE”)…… never having been touched by the other team (not that that is at all relevant) …….he reached over the goal line and as the ball was in his grasp the ball hit the ground slightly but the ball was still in his grasp.

That is a CERTAIN CATCH AND TOUCHDOWN because he took control of the ball then (reached over the goal line—“a football move”) with the ball and kept control never having been touched by the opponent. Touchdown.

1.--- It was a completed pass THEN 2. --- he made “a football move” reaching into the end zone -- that term is in the rule book. He landed in the end zone keeping control of the ball AFTER THE CATCH AND “THE FOOTBALL MOVE”. (Even if he “bobbled” the ball slightly, he had made a catch AND made that required "football move" as he reached over the goal line. ) Total horsesh*t call.

If the NFL had any balls (that aren’t deflated), they would admit they made a HUGE MISTAKE for the owner of the Patriots, Robert Kraft.

Total BS

The Steelers outplayed those New England characters most of the night, except for that beastly tight end of theirs.

Well……… we’ll see them later this year, and I don’t care where that game will be played, we may have Antonio Brown back for the entire game then.

The Patriots are going down the next time, no matter where it is played. (jmo)

He was not touched by the defense so he could walk run or crawl until he was touched down.

So, you probably use Microsoft, and possibly Verizon just to name two, and those two have given and are giving over 10 times the money the NFL has even said it was pledging to give, and you don’t think my post is important enough to read?

I did see this in your earlier post. If this is the gist of your long post, then I am glad I didn't take the time to read. Microsoft and Verizon provide services I need. The NFL is entertainment. It provides nothing that I need. I have unlimited avenues for entertainment so can happily eliminate the NFL from my list of choices.

Sorry, but no. When the receiver goes to the ground, he must control the ball completely through the entire catch, including the time on the ground. He bobbled the ball, it was incomplete.

Here is a link to a previous non-catch that was equally as consequential. Megaton, caught a TD, went to the ground and left the ball there. Incomplete pass.

I remember the first time I heard that call, it was against Megatron, against the Bears, and it cost the Lions the game. Hated that rule, ever since.

For all you Freepers who may have the inclination to post some remark about hating the NFL .... don't bother. Your comment is not necessary.. This is merely about football, football officiating, and not politics.

Sorry...but the nfl has become about politics. Expect comments.

Okay. People who are damning the NFL willingly usually give their money to companies like Microsoft and Verizon (just to name two) who give more than 10 times the money the NFL has even pledged to entities that want do destroy what is America.

Your money is providing direct operational funding to anti-American entities if you use Microsoft. And ten times the amount that has even been “pledged” by the NFL.

We can understand your pain. Did you see the video review in the Green Bay/Carolina game? The video officials called a touchdown for a player who juggled the ball and then fell on his can on the end zone line. After multiple replays, the officials called it a good touchdown because his butt was in bounds for a nanosecond.

So you are fine with those companies giving aid to people who want America to know it to end?

Surely, as a conservative, you know there are options out there rather than funding our enemies, right?

Steelers Fans, this is how Dallas Cowboys fans felt after the same sort of shennangans ended the season last year. Dez caught the ball, and it was a touchdown.

After reviewing the play, it should be down at the 1/2 yard line.

It is very easy to virtue signal when one doesn’t have to make any sacrifices or inconveniences.

Yep...You’re right.

It just looked like he had possession go the ball and I would have called him down at the 1-yard line, and thus ineligible to advance the ball any further.

The ruling on the field was correct according to the rules agreed to before the game started...

He HAD CONTROL of the ball TO the ground.

Nope. The expression 'to the ground' means all the way to the ground, throughout the process of the catch. The ball came loose during his landing, and he therefore did not complete the catch.

To nit pick a bit, how can we actually know if he had control? That's why the 'football move' rule exists. That's how you transition to being a runner, which is simply the process of establishing possession. The rules are clear, like them or not, and EVERY team gets bad breaks now and again. No point in running around with a chip on your shoulder because of the rules that apply to everybody.
