I admire your persistence, but I can’t argue with someone who can’t see the difference between companies whose products and services I need verses a stupid game that means nothing. I’m sure your intentions are good, but it’s time for me to move on. Have a nice evening.

Well, for Freepers with extremely short attention spans, I tried even conveying it in both a limerick and a haiku, but even that is too much for some people who don’t care that their money is going to a murderer’s row of unsavory liberal entities.

Not saying you are one of those, of course. You are actually in here to let us know how the Raiders and Cowboys look! (not telling other people what they should and shouldn’t do, as some nanny-statist conservatives seem to want to do)

I can accept that. I don’t tell other people what to do, especially in things like this. I expect that in return from conservatives who should allow people to conduct their own affairs without abuse and interference.

You are right. I guess when I watched the replay I forgot that.

There will be a lot of bad dreams around Pittsburgh tonight.

It just looked like he had possession go the ball and I would have called him down at the 1-yard line, and thus ineligible to advance the ball any further.

Ouderkirk, he would be down as you have described in college football. But in the pros, he’s not down until he’s both down on the ground and the defense has touched him. But other posters have made the observation that the receiver does not complete the catch until he has maintained possession of the ball “through” the entire fall. That didn’t happen as the ball both hit the ground and moved in his hands. That’s the current rule like it or not but the interpretation was correct. Close but correct.

I thought Freepers appreciated actual research of facts?

Well I read the whole thing and I appreciate your post. You make some very good points. And you make some uncomfortable points. At least, for me.

As you know, I'm boycotting the NFL. I've been a lifelong NFL fan, but the kneeling during the anthem, and now the financial support for Marxist causes, has proven too much for me. I can't sit in front of a TV and actively root for a sports team in a league that figuratively spits on America. Just can't.

But what do I do about Microsoft? As you point out, they financially promote an agenda that is far more pernicious (and far richer) than the measly NFL. It's a real dilemma for a conservative in today's America. Nearly all our tech options are produced by companies that oppose my values. What do I do? Do I go Galt, and eschew technology?

That was a rhetorical, of course. I don't know what the answer is regarding Microsoft or Verizon, for example. I use both. After reading your post enumerating all the Marxist causes they support, it's rather infuriating. I'll be honest, I don't know what the answer is here. Do you know of any options? I was able to boycott Amazon (huge financial supporter of homosexual marriage) because there are other options, so I'm thrilled to do so. Same with me he NFL. There are other options. But where I live, I can only get Verizon. And I use Microsoft software. So Houston, we have a problem...

Anyway, thanks for the thought-provoking post!

Same thing happened to Dez Bryant a few years ago and it was analyzed to death. Same result, no catch.

It’s an awful rule butt... The NFL has been applying that rule pretty consistently for several years. Since no one had touched the receiver, his knee touching the ground did not end the play and the ball did come loose when he hit the ground.

Perhaps the NFL will use this occasion and the one where they ruled a fumble out of the end zone in another game a few weeks ago to change the rule for the future.

Or not!

In any case, both the Pats and the Steelers need to bolster their defenses before post season play. That was a pitiful display.

The ones with integrity do. Those are the ones that can admit they were wrong when confronted with those facts. It used to be mostly that way around here, but now, not so much. We have plenty of our own snowflakes these days - they just melt for different reasons.

Not only did the receiver have full control and possession when he broke the plane of the goal line after making a football move but the ball never even touched the ground.

Wrong on all counts. What game were you watching?

The receiver was not down by contact so his knee touching the ground was immaterial. He actually lunged to the ground unnecessarily. He could have tucked the ball away and stepped in.

Thanks to you both. I did a lot of research, and simply want people to consider their patronage and choices.

I will not criticize people for the choices they make, for example, buying products from China, or going to see a movie from someone who hates America, etc.

I simply feel that those of us who watch NFL should be afforded that same courtesy, which I don’t feel happens often. I have no problem at all for people who don’t watch NFL football, their cowardice in this matter offends and infuriates me too.

But it is a personal choice. Thanks for listening...now I can discuss football!

True...except all the ball has to do is break the plane of the end zone. It appeared that is what happened here.

However, it has to be in somebody's possession when that happens for it to count. Breaking the plane is necessary but not sufficient, otherwise all you'd have to do is throw it into the end zone to score.

The issue is whether he had established possession of the ball somewhere in the end zone, either by catching it there or possessing it while it broke the plane. By the rules pertaining to completing the catch, he had not. Catch = touchdown, but no catch = no touchdown.
