The end of the Steeler Patriots Game
Vanity ^ | 12/17/17 | a little elbow grease

Posted on 12/17/2017 5:14:29 PM PST by a little elbow grease

As a Steeler fan who just endured that game:

I only have one thing to say about the ending of that game:

As I understand the rule of a “pass catch” it is when a player 1. --- takes possession of the thrown ball , THEN 2. ---- makes what they call “a football move”. That is what determines a catch. 1 and 2.

(This rule I believe was first employed just a few years ago concerning a catch and a subsequent fumble. A catch was determined a catch if the receiver took control of the ball and then made “a football move” before he may fumble it when hit.) --- a pretty crappy rule no matter what.

Well……….. our Steeler player definitely 1. -- caught that ball and had complete control over it, then 2. --- reached out (IN “A FOOTBALL MOVE”)…… never having been touched by the other team (not that that is at all relevant) …….he reached over the goal line and as the ball was in his grasp the ball hit the ground slightly but the ball was still in his grasp.

That is a CERTAIN CATCH AND TOUCHDOWN because he took control of the ball then (reached over the goal line—“a football move”) with the ball and kept control never having been touched by the opponent. Touchdown.

1.--- It was a completed pass THEN 2. --- he made “a football move” reaching into the end zone -- that term is in the rule book. He landed in the end zone keeping control of the ball AFTER THE CATCH AND “THE FOOTBALL MOVE”. (Even if he “bobbled” the ball slightly, he had made a catch AND made that required "football move" as he reached over the goal line. ) Total horsesh*t call.

If the NFL had any balls (that aren’t deflated), they would admit they made a HUGE MISTAKE for the owner of the Patriots, Robert Kraft.

Total BS

The Steelers outplayed those New England characters most of the night, except for that beastly tight end of theirs.

Well……… we’ll see them later this year, and I don’t care where that game will be played, we may have Antonio Brown back for the entire game then.

The Patriots are going down the next time, no matter where it is played. (jmo)

Consider it partial payback for that immaculate reception bullshit.

HAHAHAHA!

I've heard since I was a young 'un, "the ground cannot cause a fumble!"

Maybe not exactly the same thing here, but did he not have full possession of the ball when he "crossed the plane of the goal line?" (Another overused football phrase).

I'm neither a Steeler or Patriot fan; I've always followed the Vikings, so I'm hypersensitive to bad officiating.

Not that I would ever toss a whiskey bottle at an official's head.

Great game but the Steelers got robbed. Not only did the receiver have full control and possession when he broke the plane of the goal line after making a football move but the ball never even touched the ground.

I must be mistaken. I thought posters on Free Republic, conservatives took the time to look at facts and make judgements.

Let me boil it down, sorry it was too long.

So, you probably use Microsoft, and possibly Verizon just to name two, and those two have given and are giving over 10 times the money the NFL has even said it was pledging to give, and you don’t think my post is important enough to read?

Sure, it is cut and paste, but it is my research (in my effort to be a consistent conservative) not the work of someone else.

I thought Freepers appreciated actual research of facts?

You won’t even read it? Really?

Yes, I really won't. My favorite guitar blogger has posted a new lesson I want to view. That is a higher priority for me given the time I have left this evening. Sorry.

and this same call is made 10-20 times every Sunday whether it’s on the field, out of bounds or in the end zone...you have to maintain possession all the way.

True...except all the ball has to do is break the plane of the end zone. It appeared that is what happened here.

The NFL MUST begin to hold the refs accountable. Period. Either with heavy fines, terminations, suspensions, or public humiliation.

my father was shot and my uncle killed fighting for the US and freedom for us and allies. Every week these players disrespect the sacrifice my family made by disrespecting the national anthem. The thought of giving them attention or money repulses me and the thought that someone else would do it is unconscionable.

_______

They're not all kneeling, genius.

The Steelers never kneel.

Keep your sanctimony to yourself. Get a grip.

The problem is the inconsistency with the “possession while breaking the plane of the goal” rule.

No inconsistency - it's not a catch until certain requirements are met. It's not a touchdown until it's a catch. If he was standing smack in the middle of the end zone and fell over catching the ball and it came loose when he hit the ground, it's still not a touchdown. Breaking the plane in the process of the catch is irrelevant if the catch is not completed.

It was repetitious from clumsy pasting, and by the time I got to Bill Gates, my eyes were too glazed over to go on.

Someone once said, “I sent you an email. I’m sorry it is so long, but I didn’t have time to make it shorter.”

Brevity, sir.

I always thought that if the player has possession and control of the ball when it crosses the goal line, it is a touchdown and the play is over. He def had possession and control when the ball crossed the line, the only (irrelevant) question being what happened after the touchdown was scored. Pats win, Stillers robbed...

.
It doesn’t matter where on the field it is as long as it is really on the field. Why is that so hard for you?

Those two points demonstrate that there was no catch, thus a dead ball.

Stop crying!

Yet you have time to login to FR, go onto a thread and castigate people for watching NFL football, even though you freely give your patronage to corporations who give 10 times the money, actual real operational funding, to a host of entities who are actively trying to destroy this country?

And you really don’t have the time even though it is entirely possible you have done more in your patronage to fund entities that hate America?

“lot of breaks over the years during the Brady era starting with that infamous “tuck rule” ruling”

FYI...the tuck rule was called AGAINST the Patriots 4 games earlier that same year...

Back when I still recognized the game. IMHO, too many new rules, too many penalties, too many celebrations.
