Asim Krasniqi watches anxiously as the Adriatic Sea creeps ever closer to his beach bar in Albania, a country faced with an alarming pace of coastal erosion.
Im nostalgic for how this place used to be, the septuagenarian told AFP wistfully, remembering when this beach in Qerret, to the west of the capital Tirana, was bigger and many more foreign tourists came.
Today everything is degraded, he said.
Has Bangladesh gone under yet?
More witch doctoring.
I dont know about erosion, but Albania has been the armpit of Europe for centuries. It is also majority Muslim.
Maybe they will finally bathe
” Asim Krasniqi watches anxiously as the Adriatic Sea creeps ever closer to his beach bar ...”
I’ve heard this story before. It’s called “ The old man and the sea.”
Coastal erosion? Sounds like a really new concept. [/s]
It was also the last Stalinist country in Europe.
The Dutch can reclaim land from the sea. When they are majority Moroccan the sea will reclaim the land.
Here in California we get coastal deposition. All that rock and dirt washed away from Albania gets deposited here. We are growing new beaches!
Build some rock jettys.
It seems to me that sea level would be mostly constant for any longitude around the globe. If they’ve got a problem it’s not a global problem. It’s their’s.
Yur bad!
A friend described that phenomenon on Long Island; while some complained their beaches were shrinking, his was growing - so much that he was afraid they’d insert a new street between his bungalow and the water’s edge...
there are ancient seaports submerged in both the Adriatic and Mediterranean... its been happening for thousands of years.
All major rivers pretty much run to the sea, which is where a lot of the sand comes from. If ther is a change in the flow of the rivers, it’s going to affect the beaches as well. I wonder if the coast of Italy on the other side of the Adriatic Sea opposite Albania has a similar problem? These are probably localized issues they’re trying to blame on development and globull warming.
