Ken Shapiro, a former child television actor whose hit 1974 film, The Groove Tube, anticipated Saturday Night Live by a year with sketches that wickedly satirized TV, died on Nov. 18 at his home in Las Cruces, N.M. He was 75.
His daughter, Rosy Rosenkrantz, said the cause was cancer.
Mr. Shapiros film, with a cast that included Chevy Chase, a future S.N.L. star, and the comedian Richard Belzer, was simultaneously inspired by Sid Caesar and Ernie Kovacss TV comedy shows of the 1950s and invigorated by the nudity, profanity and raunchiness commonplace in 1970s movies.

I remember the “guy” on the park bench talking about STD’s. I was 18 and with my 16 YO girlfriend....
That scene brought the house down. :)
When I was a teenager, I took a very fair skinned blonde girl on a date to see a double-feature of The Groove Tube and Flesh Gordon...
When they showed the hilarious public service announcement about venereal disease, she glowed so red from embarrassment that I could see it in the dark!
Flesh Gordon was largely forgettable, but The Groove Tube had some good parts...:)
LOL everyone remembers THAT part!
That movie was very bold for it’s time. Now it would be rated G.
It was Kentucky Fried Movie that had better parts...especially the satire on Bruce Lee type Ninja movies. The Grove Tube was just queer trash like its extra pervie “Make Believe Time”.
The first time I saw this I snuck into a midnight movie when I was 14 (its rated R) and I never laughed so hard in my life. When I finally figured out what safety Sam was there were tears coming from my eyes I was laughing so hard. A great flick.
Several came out after. Tunnel Vision, The Kentucky Fried Movie, Prime Time aka American Raspberry, Amazon Women on the Moon. And there were several very poor knock offs, like The Boob Tube, and many went direct to VHS.
Didn’t that have the line, “That Cowboy, he’s a goner.”
Brown 25.
“We weqwiwe totow concentwashun!”
CC
I know! LOL!
Brown 25 was disgusting. I remember the news reporter reciting Vietnamese towns that sounded like x-rated language. Cheap laughs, really. What SNL would be like without network censors.
RIP.
