The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
What do you use to mulch the garlic?
I have used Rice Hulls for several years. They grow rice down around Sacramento and bail the hulls for livestock bedding...
Interesting. Doubt we could get that here.
You will have to ask a farmer for information...
As of last Sunday, I have no more garden-related chores to do. All of the beds have been “put to bed” for the winter - cleanded up, new dirt added to two, covered with newspaper layers and then a thick layer of pine needles. I do not intend to have any weeding to do come spring. Last year, I had to weed the two larger (newer) beds 3 times before I ever got the first tomato planted - weeds appear to grow even in the winter!
The garden shed rehab is all done - new platforms for storing garden items/tools and a tarp is up to keep out any drifting snow. There IS snow possibly in the forecast this coming week. Since the ground is still warm, if we get it there should be little or no accumulation. The temps will be markedly colder so I’m trying to finish up all the leaf raking today .... only one tree is still shedding leaves, the rest are bare.
We have some ‘natural’ Christmas decorations this year - the holly trees are loaded with red berries - more than we’ve ever seen before and they are really pretty.
I had some beautiful jalapenos on a plant, one night all the leaves disappeared from the plant and the next night 8 beautiful jalapenos. The plant next to it was not touched so I picked the 6 jalapenos. The leaves are still on the plant. (strange)
Interesting. Thanks. Hatch chili’s are popular around here.
Next time we go to the feed store....
We finally have enough growth for our boxwoods, that we might be able to put lights on them. I’ll shop for some, but will likely wait to buy during after Christmas sales.
I did some double digging today - still have wheat and rye to plant. Garlic finally having a few sprouts showing.
One more nice day to get it done, and then it’s cold weather.
It was another really nice weekend weather-wise here in Central Missouri. Forecast is for rain later today, and much cooler temps. I’m not crazy about the cold that’s coming, but it is starting to get dry here so some rain would be welcomed.
I hauled four loads of stall waste home from the neighbor lady’s stable over the weekend. That pretty much wiped out the pile next to her barn. If the dry weather holds we’re going to start working on the pile of old stuff out in her pasture. That pile has been laying there rotting for years.
Sounds like a fragrant job. LOL We are getting a little rain tonight. I checked the green house and spotted some leaks. Turns out hubby forgot to caulk around most of the bottom.
So next warm dry day, he’ll have a job to do. I got some wheat and rye planted today. Just have one small bed left and may just let it be fallow.
One of my raised beds is being reduced in size to allow for an extra walkway next to the green house-so that one also is not available this year - it will be handy for a winter garden next year - right next to greenhouse door.
