LEE — Because they couldn't find a dump open in Great Barrington, two youths threw a load of refuse down a Stockbridge hillside on Thanksgiving Day.

Saturday, Richard J. Robbins, 19, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Arlo Guthrie, 18, of Howard Beach N.Y., each paid a fine of $25 in Lee District Court after pleading guilty of illegally disposing of rubbish. Special Justice James E. Hannon ordered the youths to remove all the rubbish. They did so Saturday afternoon, following a heavy rain.

If not for the litterbug incident Arlo would be a Vietnam vet.

Since Huntington’s disease, which killed his father, has about a 50% chance in their children, Arlo spent much of his young life in terror of having the disease.

From a foolish incident as a youth to something good. That's a good thing at Thanksgiving!

Guthrie Center carries on Thanksgiving tradition with free community meal

On Thanksgiving, the Guthrie Center expects to feed more than 100 people a feast of turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, pie and more.

"You don't have to be poor to come here. We want everyone here, especially if you don't have any place to go," Laye says. "Stop by, say hi, have some cider and listen to some wonderful music." There will be 25 volunteers on staff to serve the meal, which is prepared by Samel's Deli and Catering in Pittsfield. Among the guests will be people with not much to spend and/or nowhere to go, musicians, friends of the center and members of the Guthrie family.

"It's a team process," Samel's sous chef Kristin Macutkiewicz says of preparing a meal for 100 people. Samel's has been catering the Guthrie Center Thanksgiving for about eight years, she estimates.

"I think we can all agree with everything going on in the world, that we all have a lot to be thankful for," Macutkiewicz says. "We can help, and we look forward to doing our part to make sure everyone has a full belly."

I listen to the song every year... just a tradition. Not that I agree with his politics, because I don't. But what is interesting is that when he did this song, he was a progressive liberal. He was "out there." Now the progressives and the homosexual lobby will probably soon ban the song.

Our country has fallen off the edge is so many areas.

You can get anything you want.... at Alice's Restaurant.

One of the best albums of all time, critically acclaimed in the Rolling Stone Top 100 Albums list, was Arlo’s album, “The Last Of The Brooklyn Cowboys”. A true gem. If you’ve never heard it, don’t take my word for it, read the reviews.

It turns out his song is the very same length of Nixon’s erased tape.

Son of a Marxist. He has much less of the Marxist in him. More libertarian than liberal.

Knowing now that our strategy in Vietnam was to chew up as many lives and military hardware as possible without actually, you know, winning, I find myself more and more sympathetic to what Arlo was saying.

And it's a comedy classic even if I was not sympathetic. Among men of my age and slightly older, the phrase "Group W bench" gets an instant laugh.

Coincidence??? I think not! Nixon was listening to the "song" and accidentally had his tape machine on. If only he fessed up...

I saw him in concert a year and a half ago. His commentary was vague poltically, almost like a closet conservative. I have no illusions about his liberalism, but I think he is a traditional liberal, and his views have started to border on the edge of conservative as he ages. Jmho. I still give him a pass because I like his music. And his dads.
