These Detroit Residents Are Building Their Own Internet

We’ve heard of a lot of systems created to keep the underrepresented population uninformed, but these Detroit residents aren’t going for it. Equitable Internet Initiative is a group of Detroit residents who are learning how to build autonomous, affordable, and high-speed WiFi networks to prevent what they are calling, “the creation of a digital class system,”(snip)

“We risk our human rights if we don’t take ownership and control over the internet in a way that is decentralized,” said Diana Nucera, director of the Detroit Community Technology Project. Nucera, also known as Mother Cyborg, believes her mission is to empower individuals and help them come to the realization of the potential of technology and she is doing that through the Equitable Internet Initiative.

“Detroit is one of the top five least connected cities in the United States,” says Nucera. “So what happens when you have a city that has 1,000 mbps and the people with the least [amount] of resources only have 10? I think that causes a huge problem as far as what you can do with access.”

Telecom companies won’t offer good service within these impoverished areas because they don’t see the value. In fact, they go as far as not even turning on their fibers to create the connections, so the Equitable Internet Initiative has purchased gigabyte fiber that they’ve connected to routers and pointed them to their community centers, allowing WiFi access, according to the Vice documentary.

“We need to build our own infrastructure and rethink internet service providing and access in order to reach those people who have been traditionally left out and marginalized,” said Nucera. “The work that we’ve been doing is not just about access, it’s about building a healthy digital ecosystem.”

A healthy digital ecosystem that exposes more people to EMF’s? Hmmm. Maybe it’s a plot to produce more chronic diseases in the poor.

From a customer base which won’t even pay their water bills. Good luck on the sustain and maintain end.

The internet is already decentralized. It has no central controlling authority, but bammy-$hitface tried to take ownership and control of the internet, as all marxist fascist dictators do.
There are already elements in place in the internet that seek to equalize, by giving things free to the “poor” and by taking from the “rich” (I.E., Americans.).
If this idiot gives the people of Detroit free wifi and internet access, they will use it for porn, to boast about their rapes and murders, and to talk about illegal drug deals.

I lived in a community which took over the water, sewage, streets, police, and natural gas and made them private. The only thing we couldn’t wrestle away was the telephone, cable, and electric services. The cable died on it’s own due to satellite. Duke kept the electric. Best move ever.

“Empower” has become one of my least favorite words.
In 2017, when a person uses this word, most of what they are saying is bullspit...

Looks like a nice secure location to install infrastructure. I’m sure the equipment will be safe there. /s

All for folks taking the initiative to do such an endeavor, but to associate internet access to human rights is infantile.

My least favorites are “Fair”, “Fairness” and “Equality”.
They just wreak “commie”.
Life isn’t fair and all men are born equal. The equality ends after their first breath.

In 2017, when a person uses this word, most of what they are saying is bullspit...

Many years ago while on vacation to Honduras, my two college nephews and myself met two gals who were Peace Corps volunteers from Arizona.

They had met up with their parents at the small resort we were staying.

They were living in a small village in the interior and they were there to help "empower" the women............My nephews looked at each other and we just started laughing. The women they were helping to "empower" had no electricity, dirt floors, no glass windows and washed their clothes in a river...........

“a city that has 1,000 mbps and the people with the least [amount] of resources only have 10? I think that causes a huge problem”

Really. 10 mbps is more than enough bandwidth for a single user, or even two or three users.
