"Family is always important," 10-year-old hoping to be adopted h NEWCASTLE, Okla. - 10-year-old Chris is energetic and fun, and knows how to be patient.

For fun, he likes to play The Legend of Zelda.

We sat down with Chris to find out about some of his favorite things, like his favorite subject in school.

"My favorite subjects are lunch!" he said. More specifically, "Pizza. Pizza pizza pizza pizza."

He's still thinking about what he wants to be when he grows up.

So for now, this little boy's future remains unclear. He's been in DHS custody since he was six years old.

"I want to be adopted so I can have a family," he said. "Family is always important."

He doesn't know how many times he's moved around, but knows it's been a lot.

Right now he's at a foster home, but that could change at any moment.

Chris would just like to settle down with a family to call his own, especially one that likes to travel to one of his dream destinations.

"A vacation on Hawaii,” Chris said.

A fun-loving, sweet child hoping for a place to call home.

Visit www.okdhs.org for more information on adopting a child or call (405) 767-2955.

'A Place to Call Home' is sponsored by NBC Oklahoma.

Thanks for posting this article. National Adoption Day was this past Saturday, November 18th. In my area, the event was celebrated on Friday the 17th. A good friend of mine adopted two half-sisters whom she had fostered for over a year. The two courtrooms used for all of the adoptions were decorated in a ‘Wizard of Oz’ theme (”There’s no place like home!”) and there were tons of stuffed animals and balloons for the kids to take with them. There was also a Wizard of Oz-themed reception with lots of delicious treats. The Wizard of Oz characters even showed up at the reception and in the courthouse lobby for pictures with the families. My friend was granted permission to adopt a couple of months ago, but she wanted to wait until Adoption Day because she knew what a huge deal would be made about it. It really was special for all the families and friends.

I hope little Chris here finds a family soon. Poor kid.

What a wonderful story about your loving friend! These stories tear at the heart. Most of us take having a family for granted.

I’m a teacher & I made 3 different calls to DHS last week over a new student. People who shouldn’t have the most kids & it’s heart breaking. May Chris get his wish.

My mother has told me many times that she never wanted me in the first place. I am 66 years old and live in another state and never cause her any problems. It isn’t her age, she has been this way for as long as I an remember. We are just regular normal people with three adult kids and two grands. We don’t bother her or anyone else. I often wonder why she didn’t allow me to be adopted out.

I am so sorry, what a sad story. To tell a child that is unforgivable. I hope your childhood had some rays of sunshine. Hugs to you......

Oh, I’m so sorry about your new student. It’s heartbreaking what our students go through...and I’m sure we don’t even know the half of it most of the time. I haven’t had to make a CPS or DHS call yet (knock on wood), but my supervisor is in the midst of a CPS situation with one of her high school students right now. Special ed...the poor kids don’t even know they’re being abused sometimes. It’s just normal to them.

I am so excited for my friend! I posted a little bit about her last week and I’ll mention it again here: she is single (never married) and in her mid-40s. She is also an only child with a small number of aunts, uncles and cousins. Her parents are still alive, thank goodness, and they live across from the street from her (well, she built across the street from their house, I should say). Anyway, she decided while going through cancer several years ago that once she was back in good health she would seriously look into adoption. She has been all clear of the cancer for a good while now and she started fostering kids about a year and a half or so ago. The first group of children did not work out and she was so disappointed, but these two little sisters kind of fell into her lap a bit later...and it was meant to be! They have been out of their birth mother’s home now for at least half of their lives (my friend’s was not their first foster home), but it’s definitely for the better. My friend knows about some of the horrible things they witnessed and experienced, and she suspects some other things based on behaviors. They’ll be okay, though. They’ve got a great new mom and wonderful grandparents who live right across the street!

I’ll be thinking about you and the situation with your student. It just seems sadder at this time of year...things should be fun and “sparkly” (if that makes any sense). But your poor student, and Chris from the article, have to deal with...no telling what. Take care and stay strong. You are a blessing to your students!

We had foster cared a newborn baby girl in New York city for six months and were prepared to adopt her, but the mother realized she would lose some funding and got “cleaned” up real good for the court date. They took the baby from us and gave it back to the crack addicted mom.

Being in New York, I have no idea what happened to the little girl afterwards.

The baby had tremens after birth and I would sit up at night and rock her through the withdrawals. I also would have put a bullet into mommy and daddy without one skipping a heart beat.

We tried to have kids for several years, and failed.

We adopted the newborn of my sis in law, who favors meth.

That was 6 years ago.

For some reason God later saw fit to open the fertility floodgates, and so we also have a natural 17 month old and a 3 week old.

The 6 year old is a great big sister!

I just wish we did this a decade ago. Besides the dog I am the only male. I get outvoted often.

Unfortunately children such as Chris have been bounced around from family to family due to mental or behavioral problems brought on by the parent or parents they were taken from.

I can't imagine a 10 year old just wanting to be loved by a family.........too sad.

That’s sad. But it sounds like you have done well for yourself in the family department.

Oh my goodness, that is so awful. Good for you and your family for taking in that precious baby and giving her the best months of her life. I hope her situation eventually turned out okay; she is bound to have been removed from her birth mother’s custody again.

God bless the wbarmy family!
